Trey Murphy came back to campus for a basketball camp
Future 1️⃣st Rounder in the house

Shout out to Trey Murphy taking the time to speak to our campers this week. https://t.co/R7dGCzeWeg

If he really gets drafted in the 1st round, I feel like Pera can use it for recruiting.

Beat me to it. I just don't understand why some of this board hold it against Murphy for transferring out. He obviously left on good terms, left to start for an elite program closer to home and, as a consequence, may very well be a first round draft pick. Good for him.

I feel like your post explains why some people hold the decision against Murphy...

Rice got him his in into college basketball, helped him develop into a portion of the player he is today, and will get little to no recognition or benefit from that.

I don't personally hold the decision against him, especially since he actually came back to campus. We need to find more Trey Murphy's, but ones that stick around.

Olivari has the chance to make some noise at some point if he takes some big steps over the next couple years. I'm not saying he'll even get drafted. But he has solid tools to work with and by all accounts the work ethic to keep improving.

The best way to keep more players in the fold is to grow Rice into an elite program in its own right.

The best way to do that is to keep more players in the fold.

Sounds impossible, but last year’s team has done their part already.

Just keep that momentum going!!!

And we need to purchase season tickets and attend in numbers that say “elite program”.

I think there's a strong argument to be made that Trey wouldn't be in the running for being a first-round pick had he stayed at Rice. The visibility is much poorer, due to both the respective conferences and chances of making (let alone winning mulitple games in) the NCAA Tournament.

It's looking like Trey has gotten exactly what he was after by transferring.

I don't disagree there. But even so, I think it's still obvious why fans of Rice hold his decision to transfer away from Rice against him.

I definitely think him coming back to campus helps show that he recognizes that Pera and Rice gave him an initial opportunity to showcase his skills and grow, so it should assuage some pain. But any time a player who is an integral member of a team transfers for greener pastures, at a detriment to the team someone supports, it's going to sting a bit.

Not even sure it's an argument - Murphy said as much. He basically told a Richmond paper that he hadn't learned defense until he got to Virginia. Can't be a 3&D guy without the D (boy that's a weird sentence to type).

The fact that Murphy didn't think he could improve his defending enough at Rice, and then Pera hired Greg Howell, who is super young and I don't *think* a defensive specialist, is probably the point that's worthy of more focus.
