Big Sky so far:

#2 SUU #123
#3 Montana #134

Simon is a good coach and they are a quality team but I think last year we would have seen GCU ACU SFA NMSU finish similarly to them in the Sky am I right? This Top144 is down/low on the WAC b/c new members and unsure rosters.

SUU looked really good last year, but without a lot of OOC games it's hard to compare. Like many schools, SUU filled out the OOC with non D1 schools - only D1 or soon to be games were wins over UVU and Dixie.

ACU and GCU were probably better teams last year than SUU

Net last year ranks it this way:

ACU - 74
GCU - 108
SUU - 122
SFA - 142
NMSU - 164

Which seems about right to me as far as relative rankings

NMSU at 164 seems about right to you? Look at the third post in the thread from Pistol. 164 is a huge outlier when looking at the past 10 years for NMSU.

Last year? Yes. The question was how SUU would have fared in the 2020-2021 WAC

Talent to run the WAC as well. But Covid restrictions, no home games, practicing in Phoenix didn't allow that team to play to it's full potential. Can only rate on results, not potential. 12-8, 9-8 vs DI.

I don't think the SKY is as tough as the WAC either.

Conference Net Rankings had the Big Sky 4 spots ahead of the WAC. Big Sky was ahead the prior year as well.

Jans never got the time needed to develop his bench in order to close the execution gap between them and the starters; consequently there was always a big drop in performance between the starting five and the rest of the roster. Plus injuries did not help. From the start, the team chemistry was never quite right with the new players unable to find their respective roles.

Needless to say, Jans cleaned house to start the rebuilding process for the 2021-22 roster; only keeping the starters who wanted to return and a select few from the bench who could fit Jans' tough minded system. It is too early to tell but I think this new group of Aggie players appear to compliment each other's skillset better. We will see as the season materializes.

What happens in LC if NMSU has a similar season as last year?

Well, a lot had to due with all the unknowns and the proliferation of COVID. It shutdown much of NMSU's season. Baring a major reemergence of the virus, the hope is NMSU (Jans) will have the time needed to implement his system with the new players. If this occurs, I believe NMSU will not see the same level of disruption in player development in the 2021-22 season. Keep in mind, NMSU did make it to the WAC Championship game regardless of the turmoil. But NMSU will need to get back the same level of performance (if not higher) and have the bench depth it had in the three season prior to last season in order to win the WAC Tournament. The same goes for GCU. They will need to be even better this season than last to retain their championship. With ACU coming off a remarkable season; SFA setting the bar in the SLC in years prior; and the emergence of UVU and CBU. This season could be one of the toughest championships to win by any WAC school.

RE: Top 144 basketball countdown
I think the coming season of basketball will be unusual due to the effect of the transfer portal plus a much higher level of play because players are getting an extra year -- and many are staying around to play either at their old school or a new one. There is a lot of hope at ACU that we will be stronger due to a fine group of new players joining strong returnees, including key leadership and top notch skill players that are playing another season. Support for the new head coach was very strong and he was the architect of the intense defense.

There is just no real way to tell but overall having more height and probably more speed could produce a stronger team for us -- but it looks like most teams are getting stronger, so who knows how things turn out. It will be an interesting season and the level of play should be even better for most teams. Looking at several WAC schools, there is a lot of skill hanging around. Everyone will just have to wait and see what chemistry develops with their new blends of talent. It should be an exciting new year all around.

One thing I will be interested in watching is how GCU handles being the reigning champs. It’s hard to get there and even harder to keep that title as they’ll now be having every team wanting to take them down even more. Teams like GCU, NMSU, SFA and now ACU will always have the other teams play up to knock them off. But there’s always that extra level that comes with going after the top team. Which until this year develops GCU still has that title.

Other things I’m curious to see are how ACU handles their coaching change. Seems like they stayed in their system so hopefully they won’t miss a step. Also UVU came within one game of being the WAC champs. With their big guy back and with CBU coming in with a great roster every game should be a battle. It’s gonna be a fun season.

RE: Top 144 basketball countdown
You said, "It's going to be a fun season," and I agree. I cannot remember being as excited about an upcoming year as this one. There are so many good teams and possibilities. I guess there will be ups and downs but my prediction is these are not going to be very predictable. Hopefully the new WAC will generate even more excitement and following. I suspect the TV deal could become more valuable because of so many more following more games. So you are right -- it will be exciting and fun to see what happens, but there will also be disappointment -- that is just the way the cookie crumbles. But you could not ask for much better. Time to move up the ladder and be the power conference we all hope for. It sure feels like a rising tide. I have to tell myself to calm down and not get over hyped. It is still a long time before the starting bell.
