For me personally the biggest bust was ..... Robert Whaley

That 2004 team was loaded with talent. They had 7 top 100 players and was the only UC team in history to have two 40+% three point shooters (Field Williams and Tony Bobbit). All they needed was a big man to round out that team and Whaley was a 6'10" center who was formerly the #34 overall recruit that went juco and was the juco player of the year. Whaley ended up sucking and spent the entire season whining and threatening to quit.

I don't think it's fair to label Eugene Land as a bust. He blew out his knee so bad that he missed two full seasons. Few players come back from injuries that bad.

To be honest, I completely forgot that Land went to UC though. I remember him playing for Roger Bacon in high school. Dude could ball.

He blew it out jumping out a window.

Antwan Jones. Sports Illustrated did a big story on JUCOs that featured him. He was big and rangey and was supposed to be able to shoot. Huggs never really took to him, he didn't play much or well, he was gone after a year.

One of my favorite Bearcats that stuff just didn't work out for. His back issues just completely derailed his career. He fought so hard to give us whatever he could, particularly in his senior year. I thought he was really fast before the injuries. Maybe not Mikey Saunders fast, but probably faster than any of our PGs since Nick.

I would add Donald Little. I believe he got dismissed between his junior and senior seasons. He was just coming into his own after the game winner over Marquette.

BJ Grove had a lot of physical attributes, but not the work ethic. He had great hands for a big man. I was rooting so hard for him to buy in and do the work.

I think these were the guys planned to be the big men on that team with Field Wm, Bobbit, Stokes and Maxiell.

Keith Williams gave me a similar feel to Shaq.

I kept hoping that he would find his stride and be a star, the same as with Shaq. And similar to Shaq, he never quite got to that level, even though seemingly having the talent to do so.

I mean, I guess I kind of understand where you're coming from...but Keith averaged nearly 15ppg last season, what more did you want? Yes, the team as a whole had trouble and Keith had his rough games, but it's not like we have a ton of people averaging that many points per game for us over the last decade+. Going back to the reset (2006), only Jarron, SK, and Deonta have averaged more per game in a season...and all but Deonta had better support around them.

Shaq Thomas never averaged more than 6.6ppg in his career here and Keith was above 10ppg in 3/4 seasons.

Keith was a better player than Shaq.

I thought Kieth wasn’t always effective last year. Too much here ball and bad 2’s but somebody has to score last year. Defense wasn’t good enough either based on the skill set.

Shaq Thomas was basically an athletic dude that didn’t have the high major skill to be a star. If he did he would probably been an NBA guy.

In retrospect, I almost wish Keith would have transferred out rather than return for a final year voyage on the sinking SS Brannen. That staff had him twisted up like a pretzel.

Keith didn’t have it in him to be a #1 option on a team.

No shame in that.

But that is what we needed.

Robert Whaley. Not only a bust but unreliable, suspended and brought down the Bearcats in another early round exit.
