Shortening the NBA playoffs
I personally HATE the NBA play-in tournament. If you want the regular season to mean something, you need to contract the playoffs. Making the postseason should be a big achievement. As it stands, 1/2 the league gets in. I propose eliminating the 1st round. I know that's drastic and that it basically means 3 division winners and a wild card in each conference. I'd compromise by adding 2 teams and going to 4 divisions (I know that negates the previous sentence), and shortening the season to 76 games.

RE: Shortening the NBA playoffs
As somebody whose team played in the 'Play In' last night and won, I love it. We were right in that fringe 8-10 spot the last couple of months of the season. It made all our games meaningful. Also all the jockeying by teams to avoid the playin (Lakers, Celtics) really made the games more interesting also. Since we were right in the middle of it, I like it. I realize that's probably my Grizzlies fandom talking. I'm honestly undecided on whether I want it back in 21-22 when the NBA returns to an 82 game regular schedule. I do love the marathon nature of a six month, 82 game schedule. The same with baseball's 162.

I COMPLETELY understand fandom coloring opinion. BTW: thanks for confirming that next season is back to 82.

Playoffs NEVER get shortened. You don't turn down extra money.
Play-in is great - builds excitement

Right. The TV money from ESPN and Turner is over $2 billion/year for the league, and I'd bet half that value is in the playoffs. The playoffs are a bonanza in ticket sales for every team that makes them.
The fans don't want fewer playoff games either. TNT's audience for the first night of play-in games was 60 percent higher than their regular-season average audience. ESPN did even better, not surprisingly because they had Warriors-Lakers, which had 5.6 million viewers, more than three times the average regular season audience for NBA games on ESPN. Maybe even more significant is that ESPN's other play-in game, between the Grizzlies and Spurs, not exactly the league's biggest TV draws, was the third most-watched game on ESPN this season.

For NBA, I'd make Round 1 best of 5.

THey stopped that quite a few years ago because the tv partners wanted more games to show so they upped the opening round to best of 7.

RE: Shortening the NBA playoffs
Lakers were 42-30, the Spurs 33-39, a nine games back from 7 to 10 seeds. In a shorter 72-game schedule, that's a wide separation for even a play-in tournament. That LAL-GSW game was huge cable ratings, but having Curry and the 6th biggest TV market out is something bad for the league, even though Adam Silver is championing this. Owners/Govenors should realize that this would further devalue an 82-game schedule if it continues as is.
9 and 10 could play one game and that winner plays @ the 8 would be better to me.

Keep the Play-in. The "real" Round 1, best of 5.

Ha. You would have to be the best salesman ever in order to convince team owners to play fewer games and make less money. That's like telling Ford they should sell only half as many F-150 trucks as they do now because you would enjoy yours more if there were fewer of them on the road.

I mean, the play in is cool and all but a few issues I had with it were how the hell are sub .500 teams even in this thing.... and even with a normal regular season the #8s for a few years have floated around that sub .500 mark... and why not at least make it a best of 3.... sounds like some BS with MLBs Wild Card games with a one game to be in the playoff crap.
