I think DDJ (if he stays), MAW, and Davenport are likely starters. Madsen or Newman could slide in on the wing, moving Davenport over to the 4. Need a center regardless, as Lakhin is a question mark. Also, if we're going to have a chance to compete for an at-large bid, we'll need a high-level transfer of some sort (could be a 2, 3, or 4, but has to be a guy who can create his own shot) who can be a #1 or #2 option on next year's team. Newman is a nice piece, but he's not that level of impact player. If we don't find that kind of guy, I don't see us being much better than a borderline top 100 Kenpom team. That said, I'm keeping my expectations for year #1 in check. Hoping we can land a really good 2022 class.

Am I wrong, or has DDJ been strangely silent through this coaching transition?

I am less concerned about his offer sheet, and more concerned about his knee. He played well against some of the best teams in the ACC his sophomore year. If he is healthy and playing back at that level he will be great.
A red flag with that though is he apparently wasn't showing signs of regaiining his form as the season progressed. In fact, he played eight minutes or less in the Tigers’ final six games on the 2020-21 season.

It's hard to know how much of that was his desire to start near home, or teams not knowing about his knee.
Based on his pre-injury year, he seems to be a long, highly active wing...but absolutely cannot hit the three as he is a career 29.5% 3 point shooter. Seems to be a secondary option with good length and high defensive upside...the kind of guy you want in your starting lineup to support the stars, but will likely never be a primary option except for spells during a game or two.
He kind of seems like a more defensively inclined version of Keith Williams actually...probably a very decent comp. Good pickup for sure, especially with two years of eligibility left, and allows for JD to move down the lineup to a stretch 4/hybrid forward option...we need a 5/post presence like nobody's business now though
Bolded, good analysis. I'm glad he's on board. At this point UC simply needs more players to field a team and his Wes Miller connection likely yielded this quick commitment.
I'm all in with Miller too. But I'm trying to imagine the comments here if Brannen's first commitment was a player he was recruiting for NKU and had the same offer/interest list.
Was it not Chris Vogt? I thought he announced like 2 days after Brannen was announced.
No, he was already on NKU's team but was stuck behind their PoY stud so Brannen knew all about him basketball-wise first hand. And fwiw my recollection is it was met with a lot of skepticism and sarcasm at the time.

He didn't play much after he was benched for a disciplinary issue.
"Brad Brownell was asked during postgame interviews why the veteran guard John Newman III sat out the game beside him in street clothes.
Brownell said it was a coaches' decision based on "disciplinary issues."
"He sat a game, and I don't know if he'll sit another one or not," Brownell said about the junior guard."
He played 17 minutes the next game and then didn't get to 10 minutes again the rest of the season.

That's a good catch but that's still just one game sat out. Per your post the fact he played 17 minutes the next game makes me think the discipline was basically over. Coach kept playing him after that - just not very much and he wasn't very productive in those minutes.
Sounds likely he and coach probably didn't see eye-to-eye so he entered the portal. Seems to be happening a lot across the country this year.

2 years later in retrospect, possibly appropriately met.

We've had a lot of big guys over the years do a lot less than Vogt did for us. A lot depends upon how you view the injury situation and that goes for both Vogt and Newman.

True. I'll take healthy (or even unhealthy) Vogt over Jamaree Strickland, Kelvin Gaines, or David Nyarsuk. Would put him in a similar tier with Cheikh Mbodj and Coreontae DeBerry... a notch below Octavius Ellis, Nysier Brooks, and Justin Jackson. Good big men are hard to find in the college ranks. Most guys with size don't even want to play center anymore. If I was a college coach, I'd just let them all call themselves forwards and use some reverse psychology to make them think they aren't playing center.

I can’t recall a guy who got as many starting minutes for the better part of 2 years who did less things even adequately at this level. Not a knock. He’s working with what the good lord gave him.
I watched him play 6-7 games in person in 2018-19 at NKU..at no point did I ever think he was an AAC level starter. I get why he came here but he’s a guy who would have done well to stay in the smaller pond that I expect he’ll be moving back to next year for his super senior season. I thank him for his time and wish him the best.

Adam H and Cheik Modj are two of the most frustrating players I have ever seen in my life.
RE: John Newman III, Clemson transfer guard, commits to Cincinnati Bearcats
The Newman commit is interesting, and may ultimately be just a depth piece. Here's my whole concern about the portal. We have five guys returning (I'm counting DDJ) who all likely expect considerable minutes. Lakhin is the one developmental piece. You have to think that every transfer is coming in fully expecting to play big minutes as well. I'm hoping that Newman is coming in expecting to be a role player. Ideally, we see two bigs and a wing who will get considerable minutes, and perhaps a late-signing freshman.

Checkh Mbodji was an excellent defensive big. He was worse than Vogt on offense, but he was a totally serviceable center as long as he wasn't asked to score.
RE: John Newman III, Clemson transfer guard, commits to Cincinnati Bearcats
I believe Vogt has a role on this team. We know he won't complain and will give 100% effort to do the job he's asked/coached to do. With all the discussion on playing expectations from transfer guys, how they'll mesh with the returning core and the fact we have a lot of open spots it would make sense to have a Chris Vogt on our roster. He has some liabilities but he has some strengths too. The dude is 7'1". They don't grow on trees [they are the tree]. Obviously, CWM has to see that there is a benefit both to UC and to Chris to have him on the roster. That said, his shoulder injury had to play a role in his drop-off in production last season. Game averages...
