Overall hurt, I think.

The money would not be much at our school. If they go with a shared team-wide model like the way some restaurants do tips, it would probably amount to something well under $1000 per athlete. If they go with an individual model, then a few "stars", either for looks or athletic performance, would do a little better than that and the vast majority would get nothing.

The hurt for us, if they went to a share-the-wealth model, would be recruiting mid-range (3 star-ish) players. Right now the trade-off is join UTRGV and get to play a lot versus join a top-100 team and sit on the bench, and some of them will pick getting to play. But if you add a hefty NIL guaranteed payout then I'm afraid more will choose to get paid to sit on the bench.

Or maybe not, I'm not an expert. But it will come down to marketing and I just can't see us winning any kind of marketing competition, even against a GCU or NMSU, much less P5 teams.

Quote:“Everybody says the quarterback and the star power forward in men’s basketball will get the lion’s share of things,” New Mexico State AD Mario Moccia said. “I’m not so sure the men are going to dominate the earnings, just because I don’t think the way NIL is going to be monetized is completely defined yet.”

College athletic directors concerned name, image or likeness changes will skew competitive balance
