Sad to see him go. He’s been an icon of Badger sports

He's been either the Head Coach or Athletic Director at Wisconsin for 31 years, and yet for some reason I always think of him first as Lou Holtz's DC at Notre Dame.

Wow. Terrific career. Wisconsin Athletics has had some of its greatest accomplishments under his leadership.

And yes - who will be the de facto interim head coach for Badger Football in bowl games moving forward???

It's easy to forget how big of a mess Wisconsin football was when Alvarez arrived. Bad team (previous coach went 6-27 in three seasons), little recent success (over two decades since their previous Big Ten title or even exceeding seven wins), mediocre fan support (four of six games the season before him with under 40K attendance, one even under 30K). What a coaching tenure and admin career.

Yes, in their first 99 years of existence before Alvarez arrived, Wisconsin had won exactly one bowl game - and that was the Independence Bowl. Since he arrived, Wisconsin has won 15 bowl games, including 3 Rose Bowls, an Orange Bowl and a Cotton Bowl.

Basically, before BA came to Wisconsin, they were a pre-1995 Northwestern level program, invisible. Now, if they aren't in contention for an NY6 bowl, people wonder what's going wrong this season.

Not just football. They went from 1947 to 1994 not making the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. Since 1999 they only MISSED the NCAA Tournament in 2018 (no tournament in 2020). The Badgers made back to back Final Fours in 2014 and 2015 while Alvarez was AD.

BTN sometimes shows highlights from old Wisconsin games. It looks completely unrecognizable. The stadium looks mostly empty in pre-‘93 games.

And before that he was part of Hayden Fry's outstanding coaching staff at Iowa.

Some of Hayden's assistants he had on the same staff in the same year 1983 included

Barry Alvarez
Bill Synder
Bob Stoops
Kirk Ferentz
Dan McCarney

Hayden Fry found Barry Alvarez coaching high school football in Souix City Iowa. The rest is history.

That’s quite a staff!
