Not what Downey himself said. Mick begged him to stay.

Hell, I didn’t even want us to sign the Madsens because I predicted it wouldn’t likely end well but the kid earned mad props for what he did this year. He’s a Bearcat no matter where he plays next season.

Devan Downey was gone before Mick even got here.
I was on campus at this time, and iirc I was told by someone ON THE TEAM that he asked Mick to come back and Mick basically said "You made your choice, I only want 100% Bearcats on this team, see ya"
I heard that too, but frankly makes no sense.

It makes sense in the context of Mick wanting Deonta Vaughn and it's unlikely both could have played together in the same backcourt given their size and style of play.

Cause a back court of Jamual Warren and Deonta Vaughn was so much more of a Batman and Robin combination?

Could you imagine looking at Devan Downey, then your current roster which includes a 7 foot tall Polish man named Adam and a ton of walk-ons, and saying "nah, I'm good"

Only guy he had on the roster was a NAIA hurricane hardship transfer...I’m sure he had no interest in Downey. Lol

I wonder how Mason would have reacted to Mick or Huggins.
My bet is Mason winds up in a MAC level school - and is unhappy. IMO this says more about his character than Brannen’s. Color me surprised and disappointing.
Coach Huggins horrible mistake over the years was leasing high school gyms near the NCAA Venue and practicing harder than ever the day before a game. Most the players legs were shot in the tourney. I never liked that and Huggins would say that his Dad coached that way for years and he was going to continue making the players work hard in the tourney. I wonder if he eased up after being at WVU now.

Never heard that one. If so- he needs to give his magnu *** laude card back...especially if he continued to do it.

Wow, there were a lot of bad takes on Mason in this thread. That's why I don't jump to conclusions...

There needs to be a companion dunce hat thread for some of the thick skulled and thin skinned posts in the first couple pages of this sucker.

the only returnee that Mick inherited was Cedric McGown. Ced had a decent junior year under kennedy but benefitted playing alongside some stars. His only year with Mick was a major disappointment. HE didn't play anything like he did.
Ron Allen didn't help Mick either. Wouldn't rebound and wanted to mainly shoot 3 pointers and didn't hit many of them. No defense either. Mick couldn't play him much as the season progressed.
