Rumor is Martin wanted $1.5M. UC's starting at $1.1M.
Source?
Yeah, we are to believe that Erik Martin balked at his first head coaching job, at his alma mater, for quadruple his current salary, because it wasn't enough money? Citation definitely needed . . .
Roughly initial positions according to multiple sources on other boards including an insider's source. Nobody claimed this was a stalemate by the way. I'm not sure why this has so much skepticism - what did you think we'd be paying? Miller's deal is reportedly 6 years and $8M which comes to a little over $1.3M or right in the middle of those two but I guess you'll have to find your own sources for that...
I thought you were implying that UC wanted Martin but the deal broke down over salary demands. But apparently not?

How about the competition the candidate everyone seemed to want got his 20 win seasons against as a head coach?
Talent is relative my man...beating your peers pretty consistently means something more than polishing the stool during time outs to me, but everyone has their own list of important qualities.

I don't know either way. I included the numbers in that post as a comparison to what Arkansas is paying their guy.
Per Chad's podcast, Martin interviewed twice (perhaps both before anybody else interviewed once) and that absolutely included at least a general exchange of numbers although not necessarily an "offer". Somewhat bizarrely/disappointingly it sounds like that's the last word Martin heard from UC.
But there's still a ton of haze on all the details of what actually happened when and what qualifies as what with each rumored candidate (e.g. discussion/investigation/interest/interview)

RE: Coaching Carousel
Now that most of the CBB posts have been filled, how does UC’s choice compare? Outside of TX and OU, there aren’t any others that make you think - if we had been earlier or if we had more $ we could have gotten . . .
The debate around the UNC hire makes me think that sometimes it is better to be lucky than good. With the retirement of Williams, its timing and the selection of Davis - fate lined up us and Miller.
I think Miller could have waited a year if he didn’t think UC was the right opportunity. I also think Erik Martin would have been a reasonable choice, especially reading through the list and seeing other assistant coaches being hired.

Yeah, I would have been fine with Erik Martin, but now that Wes is here, I'm thrilled with the hire. And I agree, Wes could have easily waited another year if he didn't think this job was right for him. He's a hot name, and by all accounts was very happy coaching at UNCG. Also, UNCG fans have said they had a pretty decent squad coming back even with the loss of Isaiah Miller, so they expected to compete in the SoCon in 2021-22.

Quote:Late last month, Indiana University hired Mike Woodson to be the new coach of its men's basketball team, officially ending the speculation surrounding Brad Stevens. But while we've known for some time now that Stevens wouldn't be leaving the Boston Celtics to go back to college, we didn't know just how seriously Indiana was pursuing him.
As it turns out, they really weren't messing around. On Saturday, ahead of the Celtics matchup with the Golden State Warriors, Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the school made Stevens a massive long-term offer to take the job.
"That Indiana University job that opened a few weeks ago," Wojnarowski said. "I was told that Indiana was prepared to offer him seven years, $70 million."
That is a staggering sum that would have made Stevens the highest paid coach in NCAA men's basketball by some margin. For now, that honor still belongs to John Calipari, who makes $8 million per year at Kentucky. In fact, Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and Jay Wright of Villanova are the only college coaches making more than $5 million per year.
It's not clear how much Stevens makes right now, as terms of the contract extension he signed in August of 2020 were not released. It's safe to assume that it's less than $10 million per year, however, as Indiana certainly wouldn't have offered him a pay decrease as part of their pitch to convince him to leave the NBA.
While that's a lot of money to turn down, Stevens made it clear in one of his many statements about the situation that he's happy in Boston, and has no interest in leaving any time soon.
"I'm so grateful to this organization, and to the people here, and for all that they've done for us," Stevens said. "I've got unbelievable leadership in Danny [Ainge] and Wyc [Grousbeck] and [Stephen Pagliuca], and what they've done for us, the way we've been supported... I love coming to work every day. I love this area. People have been great to us. My family is so happy."
In addition, there are a number of challenges that come with being a college coach, as Stevens is quite familiar with from his days at Butler. Most notably, recruiting, which is an exhausting exercise. If the actual basketball responsibilities weren't enough, college coaches have to spend months and months each year trying to convince players to join the program. Obviously Stevens has multiple reasons he didn't want to leave the NBA, but that's likely at the top of the list.

Make no mistake, the IU fans/alumni I know wanted Stevens badly and all other candidates were a fallback. Maybe Mark Cuban kicked in a few million dollars to try to get Stevens in hopes that he could return IU to its former glory. Expensive bet in my mind and I think highly of Stevens. But IU basketball has fallen behind several B10 programs in recent years and will have to climb a steep hill to regain its mojo as "the" program in that conference.
UC appears to have made an excellent choice in Wes Miller. I will also suggest that Wes made an excellent choice in picking UC. He saw elite history, top facilities and a chance to compete immediately in a very good (but not great) basketball conference. The road to conference championships and more is much tougher in the Privileged Five. Even with all the drama of the past two seasons and what was often questionable coaching UC tied for regular season champs one year and played in the CCG the next. If Miller puts the right pieces together this spring, UC will be right back in the hunt this coming season.

Probably didn't hurt matters that Houston made their run to the Final Four this season. In other words, our conference has a few teams [including Cincinnati] that have that capability [or ability in Houston's case].

Agreed. Who had a bracket in March with the American Conference represented in the Final Four and the B10 on the outside looking in? The point has often been made how different the post-season tournament is from the regular season.
For the B10, that was certainly the case in 2021. It's been 18 years since any current member of the B10 (Maryland) won and 21 years since Michigan State cut down the nets. Multiple titles since then for the ACC, (old) Big East, Villanova, and even one for the American.
We live in a region where many myopic B10 fans feed daily on the hype of being the greatest conference, but other than OSU in football, there's been little for the devoted to gloat about in football or basketball for nearly two decades.

Multiple sources are indicating he has become increasingly burnt out with coaching after the last two seasons and as a young father. He has been incredibly long-tenured for an NBA coach...kind of crazy that a guy with 8 years as an NBA head coach, only being 44 years old, and no management experience, it seems like a REALLY weird move for all involved out of context. A burnt out young guy with very little (if any) front office experience being hired as the GM doesn't look like a great move at face value.

How much experience did Danny Ainge have before they made him a Pres of the Celtics?

About the same, but he was a Celtic guy and had the Red Auerbach stamp of approval, but the point is taken. I guess the only thing that is different is that there are multiple national and local beats who have said that it's kind of an unspoken truth that he was getting burnt out the last two years. I'm not sure that being a GM has any less stress than being a coach, and he doesn't have a legend basically leading him hand in hand for his first few years.

Duke had 4 Final Fours before Coach K. Under two different coaches.
And a guy like Coach K builds a program to the point where it's self-sustaining. Penn State football only had 2 top-10 finishes before Joe Paterno.
