NMSU is 5-7, but 3-1 in conference play. Northern Colorado this weekend, who I am sure did not get any outside practice this week, is 4-11 and 0-4 in WAC play as they were swept by CBU.

RE: 2021 Baseball
Hornets (14-5, 7-1 WAC) sweep Utah Valley (2-13, 0-4 WAC). Due to rain, the series was a set of doubleheaders. The Hornet bats stayed hot but the pitching wasn’t as sharp as it could have been.

Friday, Game 1: 8-3 win. Randall gets his 3rd win and gives up 3 runs over all 7 innings while striking out 6. 4 Hornets have multi-hit games. Walstad led the way going 3/4 with 4 RBIs and coming up a triple short of the cycle.

Friday, Game 2: 8-5 win. Hornets come out on top of a back and forth game. Bojorquez, Walstad and Moretto go 2/4 and combine for 5 RBIs.

Sunday, Game 1: 10-4 win. Adams gets his 3rd win of the season and gives up 3 runs over 7 innings with 5 Ks. Hornets open up a tie game with a 5 run 5th inning, 3 of which came on a Moretto HR. Doyle goes 4/5 with a HR and 2 RBIs and was a triple short of the cycle and Walstad drove in 3 runs.

Sunday, Game 2: 11-7 win. Hornets come back from a 5-0 deficit and explode for 8 runs in the 7th inning. Torres highlighted the big inning with a 2 run HR and Smith followed up with a 3 run shot in the 8th.

Hornets host WAC and D1 newcomer Dixie State (4-12, 3-5 WAC) for a 4 games series this weekend at the John. The Trailblazers are coming into this series having split 4 games against UTRGV and have won 4 of their last 6 including a midweek game at BYU. DSU has a midweek game at Utah before heading to town.

Hornets (18-6, 10-2 WAC) take 3 of 4 from visiting Dixie State (6-15, 4-8 WAC) and follow the series up with a win at home over Stanford (14-4) earlier this afternoon.

Friday: 9-3 win. Randall ties the Hornet single game strikeout record with 14 K’s over 7 innings for his 4th win. Hornets score 9 runs on 11 hits, only one of those being an extra base hit (double).

Saturday, Game 1: 9-4 win. Hornets blow a back-and-forth game wide open with a 4-run 4th inning. Gonzalez drove in 3 runs in the game.

Saturday, Game 2: 10-5 win. Adams gets roughed up by DSU for all 5 of their runs but the Hornet bullpen goes 4.2 innings without giving up a run. 4 Hornets have 2 RBIs each including Dorraugh who went 4 for 4 on the day.

Sunday: 5-7 loss. DSU ends the Hornets 8 game winning streak by winning a back-and-forth contest with some late runs. The Trailblazers bullpen shutouts the Hornets in the final 3 innings of the game.

Monday: 3-2 win. Hornet pitching gives up a couple of runs to the Cardinal in the 2nd inning but shuts them out the rest of the way only giving up 3 hits over the final 7 innings. Smith drove in all 3 Hornet runs with 2 coming off of a double in the 7th and the walk off on a single in the 9th.

Hornets head to Omaha for a 4-game set against Creighton (6-7) this weekend.

Our Creighton series was cancelled, but the Hornets are ranked 24th for the first time in program history.

RE: 2021 Baseball
Hornets (21-7, 13-3 WAC) take 3 of 4 from visiting New Mexico State (11-17, 9-7 WAC) to stay tied atop the WAC.

Friday, Game 1: 10-5 win. NMSU jumped on top early y 4 runs but the Hornets rallied for the win. Randall went 6 innings and 11 K’s in the win. Walstad started the rally with a solo HR in the 4th and Torres tied the game with a 3 run HR later that inning. Bacho accounted for 3 RBIs on the day.

Friday, Game 2: 2-10 loss. Saul has another horrid outing and gave up 6 runs in 2.2 inning of work. Hornet bats were quiet with the exception of a Moretto solo HR in the 5th.

Saturday: 9-6 win. Adams picked up the win and went 6 innings with 8 K’s of 1 run ball in this gem. Smith went 2/4 with a 2 run HR and 4 RBIs on the day. Walstad went 2/3 with a double a HR for 3 RBIs on the day. NMSU mounted a furious 9th inning rally that scored 5 runs but fell short.

Sunday: 4-0 win. Rodriguez (5th win) gave up just 3 hits in 5 innings of work with Zalasky and Churby joining in on the shutout. Moretto’s 3 run HR in the 2nd was enough to lift the Hornets to another win.

Hornets host Seattle (10-16, 4-8 WAC) for a 4 games series this weekend.

RE: 2021 Baseball
The Hornets (22-10, 14-6 WAC) get shutout in the first 3 games of the series but avoid the sweep against Seattle (13-7, 7-9, WAC). The series will likely cost the Hornets a shot at the regular season title.

Friday: 0-6 loss. The Hornet only manage 3 hits as Randall gave up 4 runs in 7.1 innings of work. Seattle’s Mazzone hit 2, 2 run HRs.

Saturday, Game 1: 0-3 loss. Seattle wins a pitching duel in extra innings. Hornets couldn’t come through in their half of the 8th.

Saturday, Game 2: 0-5 loss. The Hornets only manage 4 hits as Martizia gets banged up as Seattle blew the game open in the 6th.

Sunday: 11-4 win. The Hornet bats get back on track and rack up 11 runs on 15 hits including 3 doubles and a solo HR from Gonzalez in a come from behind win. The Hornet bullpen held solid after a bumpy 3rd and 4th inning. Haynes earned his first win of his career.

Hornets head to Greeley to face cellar dweller Northern Colorado (7-22, 3-13 WAC). Hornets will need a sweep to keep pace with the WAC leaders.

GCU with a clean sweep of NMSU this weekend to move a 1/2 game back of CBU in the standings and moves to 16-4 in WAC play, 22-14-1 overall. GCU has 2 midweek games against ASU this week before playing Sacramento State next weekend. GCU and CBU close out the season against each other and that may determine the regular season championship.

Sac State is also still very much in the race for the regular season championship since they still have 4 games left with CBU and GCU. Traditionally Sac State has had great pitching (not sure about this year) so they could get hot and run the table.

Go Lopes!

Go Lopes!

Our pitching is not as good as it was in the 2019 season but the "go to" guys are pretty solid. The biggest let down has been that the young pitching has not found consistency.

Hornets added 2 mid week games at Kansas following the UNC series so we'll head home to face GCU with minimum rest. I think we're a long shot to win the WAC regular season at this point.

RE: 2021 Baseball
Hornets (24-12, 16-8 WAC) embarrassingly split the series at Northern Colorado (9-24, 5-15 WAC). Matt Smith became the all-time hits leader for the Hornets and Adams won WAC Pitcher of the Week for the 2nd time. Hornets stranded over 30 base runners in scoring position on the series.

Friday: 4-2 win. Randall pitched a strong 8+ innings and got 14 K’s. Zalasky came in the 9th with a bases loaded and no out jam and struck out the side for his 2nd save on the year. Solo HRs by Bacho and Vincelli-Simard in the 6th were the difference.

Saturday, Game 1: 6-8 loss. Rodriguez got crushed for 7 runs in 1.1 inning of work. Hornet bats couldn’t come up with clutch hits with RISP.

Saturday, Game 2: 10-1 win. Adams strikes out 13 in 7.2 innings. Hornets rack up 10 runs on mostly station to station baseball.

Sunday: 11-13 loss. Hornet pitching completely implodes as a late Hornet rally fell short. Hornets stranded 19 baserunners in the loss. Matt Smith became the all-time Hornet hits leader with a single in the 3rd.

Hornets have a 2 game mid-week series at Kansas (22-18, 3-11 B12) starting tomorrow.

Well, a huge series for UTRGV Baseball as they will visit the "Skew" in New Mexico State. The reason it is huge both teams are in the mix to finish second or third and the series will pave the way to see which team will carry the momentum. UTRGV winners of six straight will look to win a series versus a difficult NMST side.

RE: 2021 Baseball
Hornets (25-13, 16-8 WAC) split the series at Kansas (23-19, 3-11 B12).

Tuesday, 11-6 win. Saul had a solid start and the Hornet bullpen followed up with a good showing aside from a rough 5th inning. Rodriguez gets his 5th win of the year. 5 Hornets had a multi-hit game with 4 doubles and a solo HR by McPhillips.

Wednesday, 4-6 loss. Hornets jumped out to an early lead, but Kansas took the lead for good on a 2 run HR off of Martizia in the 7th. Vincelli-Simard hit his 5th HR of the year.

Hornets host GCU (23-15-1, 16-4 WAC) who is coming in as winners of 9 of their last 10 and looking to chase down CBU for the regular season title. The Lopes have not played since Wednesday of last week.

RE: 2021 Baseball
The Hornets (26-16, 17-11 WAC) got roughed up by Grand Canyon (26-16-1, 19-5 WAC) and lost 3 of 4 at the John this past weekend.

Friday: 5-15 loss. Hornets got on the board early but Adams got tagged for 9 earned runs in 4 innings. Tinsley came in and did no better, giving up 6 earned runs in 3 innings. GCU hit 5 HRs in the game that scored 12 of the 15 runs.

Saturday, Game 1: 1-6 loss. Hornet pitching faired a little better with Haynes and Tremain on the mound. However a GCU 3 run HR in the 5th blew the game wide open as the Hornet bats were kept in check.

Saturday, Game 2: 0-12 loss. Hornets get shutout as all the GCU damage was done in the early innings. Saul gave up 9 runs (6 earned) in 1.2 innings of work. Harper was the lone bright spot giving up only 1 earned run in 5 innings of relief.

Sunday, 3-2 win. Hornets salvage the weekend with a win in a pitching duel with Randall getting the start. Walstad knocked in all 3 Hornet runs including a 2 run walk off double in the bottom of the 9th.

Hornets have another brutal series ahead as they head to Riverside to face WAC leading Cal Baptist (29-11, 21-3 WAC) who is on a 10 game winning streak.

We went 1-3. The pattern is we're impressive at home but kind of lame on the road. Unfortunately we're playing Sac State away.

RE: 2021 Baseball
Hornets (28-18, 19-13 WAC) had an impressive split last weekend at WAC leading Cal Baptist (31-13, 23-5 WAC).

Friday: 14-11 win. A huge 6th run 4th inning helped the Hornets open the series with a win as the bullpen managed to hang on late. Smith went 4 for 5 with 5 RBIs including a grand slam in the 4th.

Saturday, Game 1: 1-6 loss. Randall got chased after 3 innings and the Hornet bats were kept quiet.

Saturday, Game 2: 6-7 loss. A 9th inning Hornet rally forces extra innings, but the Hornets couldn’t pull off the win. Saul had a solid 5 inning performance but Haynes gave up 4 runs in his 2 innings of relief. Walstad and Smith both had 2 RBIs.

Sunday: 14-1 win. Adams pitched a gem with 1 earned run and 5 Ks in his complete game performance. Walstad, Smith, and Bacho each have a 2 run HR and Moretto added a 3 run HR late in the blow out win.

Hornets take a break from WAC play and have a split home and home 4 game series with San Francisco (20-22, 15-9 WCC) this weekend. USF is currently 3rd in the WCC.

The Hornets (31-19, 19-13 WAC) take 3 of 4 against San Francisco (21-25, 15-9 WCC) and in the process have secured their 9th consecutive (complete) season of 30 or more wins. Hornets are the only D1 program in CA with such a streak.

Friday: 2-1 win. Both Hornets runs were unearned. Doyle scored Torres in the top of the 8th for the lead as Randall, Rodriguez, and Zalasky combine for 1 earned run on 5 hits with 13 K’s and only 1 walk.

Saturday, Game 1: 7-6 win. Hornets rally from an early 5 run deficit. A Bacho 3 run HR in the 5th tied it and a bloop double by Doyle in the 6th gave the Hornets the lead. USF tied the game on a blown runners interference call that forced a bottom 7th where the pinch hitting Denholm walked it off with an RBI single down the 3rd base line.

Saturday, Game 2: 0-8 loss. One hit. That’s all we got. One *** **** hit.

Sunday: 4-0 win. Saul has his best outing of his career and throws 8 inning of shutout ball with 6 K’s and only allowing 4 hits. Smith had a solo HR in the 3rd and a McPhillips double in the 8th added a couple of insurance runs.

Hornets wrap up the regular season at the John with a huge series starting this Thursday against UT Rio Grande Valley (28-21, 19-12 WAC). The Hornets can claim the 2 seed in the WAC Tournament if they can win 3 of 4. The 2 seed gets a day 1 bye in the WACT.

Elsewhere in the WAC, GCU and CBU (not eligible for the WACT) will battle it out for the regular season crown. Seattle and Utah Valley will battle for the remaining WACT seed in which UVU will need a sweep to secure it (not sure on tie-breakers).

Congrats. Yeah we'll see how we match up with the TX programs in due time. May not see many of them every year depending on how the scheduling in the expanded conference will be handled.

SFA Baseball was discontinued in 1995 and they brought it back in 2005.

Not our strongest sport.

Kansas City Royal short stop Hunter Dozier is a Lumberjack, who played in 2011-13; named conference player of the year in 2013 and finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award. He was selected in the first round (eighth overall) in 2013 MLB Draft.

2011-13 were our best seasons.

Also, Mariner's pitcher Will Vest is a Lumberjack who was at SFA in 2016-2017.
