Nope. The bookmakers' odds and rankings are biased in favor of evening out the amount of money bet on different sides of a proposition, because that means the book is protected from big losses and always makes money on the juice.
That's why certain teams popular with individual bettors are usually overrated by the sportsbooks. The odds on those teams to win are longer than they should be, or point spreads are less favorable to them than they should be, because the book wants to induce more people to bet against the popular teams to cover the bets made by people who bet on the popular teams.
That's true. But I didn't say use point spreads to rank teams. I said ask the people who set those spreads, knowing that in some cases they are purposefully skewed by them to compensate for irrational bettor behavior.

I don't like when Tulane play them.
Tulane has long-standing series with LSU, USM, Auburn, ULL... ...if you cannot come up with a Tulane-friendly opponent call your freaking neighbors ROFL.

Yes, bookmakers could care less about which team is really better. Their job is to read the public's perception of how the game will go, so as to come as close as possible to getting the same amount of money bet on both teams.
The bookie might personally think the Bucs are really 10 points better than the Chiefs. But if he know the public thinks the Chiefs are a few points better, the opening line will be Chiefs -3 or something.
"Gambling", as in risk, is for the bettor. The House wants as close as possible to a sure thing.

Let me start by saying I agree with the basic idea here, that these games are typically not that competitive. But it’s most definitively not universally accurate for all FCS v FBS matchups. I bet you weren’t thinking this way around 4pm on 9/11/10. JMU gave NCSU a pretty good scare a couple years ago too. And absolutely WALLOPED ECU before that.
So cool off on that bravado just a touch.
VT was crazy to schedule the best FCS team in the nation (at the time) on a short week.
That said, when P5 powerhouse teams schedule, not just FCS, but WEAK FCS teams, they absolutely should be ashamed - and that's not just bravado!

Heheh, JMU didn’t even make the FCS playoffs the year we beat VPI&SU. A stretch to call them #1 at the time.

My favorite college football game:
Maine 9 - Mississippi State 7 from 2004.
Maine finished the year 5-6.

Correct, and they didn't actually win the FCS championship in 2011 either (2004 and 2016 only). "Best" is a matter of opinion, of course.
