Clark: "Talk is cheap," details items on his request list for UAB program
(12-24-2020 06:46 AM)BlazinBham Wrote: Recruiting hasn’t improved upon his standards. You want to be top 25 On the field but can’t do it with a 115th ranked class in recruiting. I’m for giving him what he needs in order to improve in that category. Is that what most of the sec schools likely have? Yes.
Is it what UCF, Memphis, SMU, Cincinnati, Houston, ULaLa, Coastal, App State, Boise State have that puts them in that top 25 category? No.
I think there’s some meeting in the middle. You hire a staff that can beat teams as we’d expect in ULaLa and La Tech and we’ll give you more facilities in hopes to close the gap in not letting instate recruits leave for out of state p5 or top25 g5 schools.
We have the 115th ranked recruiting class, yet win our division 3 years running and 2 of 3 CCG. We were Spencer Brown’s, the leading rusher in UAB history, only D1 offer out of high school.
Ask me who, empirically, has been correct in evaluating talent and putting the best team on the field.
The guys who decide stars get a lot of pub and make a lot of money. Good for them. But don’t tell me we’re not evaluating talent or attracting elite players when I’m watching the results on the field and not refreshing 247 Sports every couple of hours.

We just put 20 guys on the all Conf team. We have 3 invites to major All star games. We have won 2 of last three conference championships. We have statistically the best Oline in our history, with more depth than ever before. Let’s don’t make uneducated statements like this!
I respect you greatly OldDragon but I still have to disagree. If our recruiting is improved why do we only have one post-Return player on NFL rosters (Ant Rush)? Let's see if guys like Watkins and Smith actually get drafted.
We are winning with about the same talent Callaway and McGee had on the roster. We do have much better coaching but we also play much weaker competition.
Look at our league in these bowl games. CUSA is a half step above FCS. If we dropped to the Southern Conference we might have even more on the All-conference team.
I don’t post much but had to on this subject and yes we do disagree here. The fun part of being a fan is debating all the aspects of the team we love, I get it. However, the caliber of player is so much better and we have a staff that develops players well. Again, to put 20 on the all conference team speaks volumes. We go into south Florida and get players, we go into Texas and get players, that’s never happened consistently. Don’t base your opinion on Rivals, They don’t evaluate hardly past 4 star rated players or guys that are on the SEC list somewhere. We have two championships and are building a culture that expects to win. Lots of time, money snd sacrifice went into that facility and the stadium that’s coming. Maybe I’m sensitive lol, but it has changed our future, how the high school kids see us and I’m pretty damn proud of it. Go Blazers

Looking over our roster, assuming we don’t lose anyone we are not expecting, we will have our best, deepest team ever. Entire OL back will be huge. Defense will Miss Jordan but we had some impact guys sitting out from LSU, Arizona. We will miss Spencer but McBride will be a monster. The WR transfer from Memphis will make an impact. Between him and Shropshire’s breakout game I am not as nervous about WR as I was.
We need to work on more explosiveness on O in the short and midrange passing game. We need to snag another pass rusher and LB who can make an impact. Maybe another stud DT.
We will be deep, mature and explosive.
How good will come down to QB. If TJ comes back and is healthy, I think he will be fine. We need another QB just in case. If TJ decides to move on, we should try to snag an experienced transfer from the portal. I hope he will make that decision early so we can recruit accordingly.
With the team we have, I think a guy like Jack Abraham would jump on over if he new he had a great shot to start. Abraham with a good OL is a first-team all league kind of guy.

Lucero had one FBS offer, UAB. Show me otherwise.
If our talent is better then why are all but ONE of our current NFL players from the pre-shutdown era? Still waiting on an explanation. Maybe one our post-return players should actually get drafted before we start saying our talent is better than other eras.
I don't think anybody expects UAB to out-recruit SEC teams but it would be nice if more of our signees had other FBS offers. Right now we're beating out FCS schools for skill players like Mehrotra.
Our top offensive and overall recruit de-commited. Our top receiver opted out for the last month of the season. Our 2nd best receiver is in the portal. Our QB #'s are just awful and have been. We have a OC and QB coach problem on this team and we won't progress any further than where we're at without it being addressed.

A receiver opting out to prepare for the draft and a defensive recruit are not the fault of our OC

I think there are definitely times we should be attacking the whole field and times we get predictable, but mostly problems are self evident to a lot of us. Some of the big decisions are on Clark also not the OC. I don’t always agree with them.
In 2019 we had a gunslinger of a QB who was great at home run balls but forced the ball like Brett Favre into places he shouldn’t throw. His successes fueled some of those mistakes. I don’t really blame that on the OC.
In 2020, those memories are still in some of your heads, and due to the circumstances the OC is being blamed again unfairly. The young QB made young mistakes after people got film on him. Tyler, injured, hasn’t had the full playbook. But he also actually has NOT made a ton of mistakes. I think he is a good bit better honestly. Just hasn’t been healthy to show it.
Reality is we have won two out of the last three championships and I like it. Do I want greater success? sure. I also was there in LF watching us roll up big offensive stats and losing more than we won. I like Championships.
I agree TJ made a lot less mistakes this year. I still think he is a really talented QB, he has just been injured for so long. You can tell by his spiral he just doesn't have very good arm strength right now. Despite that, he is still able to throw a really nice deep ball. How someone could be so bad on short to intermediate throws and good on long balls has always confused me - like a sharpshooter in basketball sucking at freethrows.. just doesn't make sense.. But anyways, I think we will be fine at qb if TJ can finally get healthy and continue to cut down on his turnovers like he did this year, especially at the end of the year.
When TJ first took over for Erdely, he looked amazing, maybe our best true QB since Hackney.

Malachi Bennett was not a defensive recruit, he was a 4 star WR. Clark didn't "mince words" about Watkins departure. It obviously wasn't with his blessing but Watkins must have thought it would only hurt his draft status to play. He is not a draft lock so that says a lot in itself. Then our 2nd best WR hits the portal before our bowl opponent is even announced.
That's all not a coincidence. That's some talented guys deciding they are better off not playing for us. You may not think our offense and OC have anything to do with it but I would disagree.

Yes it’s for recruiting.
Yes field was part of original plan.
Yes cafeteria. He mentioned it to me while football was shut down in the design phase of the practice facility that this was something that would eventually be needed. There are other things but it’s not my place to say them. I’ll let him.
Well said.

Our recruiting just isn't much different than it's been in the last 10-15 years. I also think no matter what the final rankings say, there's probably not that much difference in all but the top couple of classes in CUSA and The Belt. The comment about the ratings not mattering that much beyond the 4 and 5 star players is fairly accurate. We're all getting about the same level of players, what's left after the bigger programs are done.
Coach Clark does a great job coaching those guys up, obviously. He's proven he can win this godforsaken conference with the classes we've been signing. My point is if want to take the next step up, the one that takes us to a better league, we have to improve our recruiting and we have to upgrade our offense to at least this century. If we are behind in these areas due to a cafeteria gap with our competition, then by all means prioritize the cafeteria.

Players are not the only targets of recruiting. A ptogram also has to attract and then keep the coaches who help win championships. This is done by meeting the competition for their services which are always out there. Keeping players and their coaches happy is the job of a sport's head coach and behind him, the boosters who provide the resources. It is simple to state but hard to do on a consistent basis. As Boise State has found out, one price of a quality winning program is finding top coaches when they get hired away. After a couple more championships, UAB may find itself in their shoes since we are not yet a "destination program"..

The think I’ve noticed over 50 years of watching college football is that if you don’t have a QB you’re dead. Unfortunately there aren’t enough really good ones for everybody to get a winner
Imho we’re doing pretty well with our recruits.I could see signing more qb’s and moving some to other positions when they don’t develop. It was a different world in the ‘60’s but I think Ole Miss signed 11qb’s the year Archie Manning signed. Only 2 saw a down at the position

Going to agree with Attalla on this one. Only position that is of obvious concern is unfortunately the most important one. With all due respect to TJ, a fine young man who has been good in the past, he simply isn't the dynamic qb we need. And his arm is shot. If that kid that transferred from Auburn to Liberty was playing for us, we would be a top 30 team. As far as our OC I wouldn't know him if I bumped into him but you can't open things up with the qbs we currently have. Hope the one from Louisiana can change that or maybe find one in the portal. One more thing. Stop talking about other schools trying to tell a coach who they can hire while 2/3 of you demand Clark fire his OC. If you don't like the offense, blame Clark. His decision to hire and fire his staff. PERIOD. Like I say, a good qb that can make the throws and use his legs and suddenly the offensive line looks better and our coaches look smarter.

What about the sports medicine facility with a tie in to the medical school/research enterprise? Clark mentioned that a few times, but then it wasn't brought up anymore.

A lot of what I'm reading sounds like stay the course on offense. No new coaches and count on TJ3 as our starter next year. Hope that he gets healthy and stays that way for a full calendar year, even though he's been injured on and off since high school and hasn't started a full season yet at UAB. I don't see a true freshman like Mehrotra seeing much playing time so our starter and back ups will be the same as the last two seasons unless we snag a transfer.
I guess we'll keep on doing what we've been doing and hope for different results.
