We are hopefully not going to have to "rely" on the end of the bench for significant minutes. But they may be called on at some point to provide key minutes in a crucial game. So some real game experience in a non-crucial game could provide benefits.

Nothing. They aren't going to get significant time during conference play, so why not use this time to continue to teach the guys who are going to play?

Because it usually comes down to the bench at the end of the season. Injuries, foul trouble, back to back to back games take a toll on the starters.

I totally disagree. 8 guys in the rotation is plenty.

The best quote on it I've ever heard.

The year before Nevada played 3 guys over 34 minutes. 1 guy 29, 1 guy 26. Porter played 17 minutes. That left 2 leftover players to played 10-12 mins total per game.

College players play everyday. They play AAU ball nonstop. They play pickup ball. They aren't getting gassed by playing 30 minutes a game, twice a week. They aren't getting gassed playing 30 minutes a game; back to back or in the tourney when its 3-4 nights in a row.

This year is weird because its a redshirt year for everyone but this is the ideal approach. 4 guys that are redshirting or sit out transfers. 9 active players. 6-7 playing 24+ minutes per game and the last 2-3 picking up the scraps.

Gonzaga blows a lot of teams out. They have 6 guys averaging 20 or more minutes and 1 guy playing 14. The rest is scraps. Jay Wright knows this, he typically plays a core rotation of 6 per year and then 1-2 pick up the rest of the minutes, mostly garbage time.
1. Your favorite quote is from a coked up whack job that basically hasn't done crap as a college basketball coach.
2. In your other two examples you claim a 6 man rotation, but then claim others "pick up the scraps" which means they are playing more than 6.

1) LOL

2) Yes, core rotation is different than players playing in garbage time.

Yep. I recall a few years ago when ODU had another undersized center playing for Jeff. He was a transfer from CNU I believe and played High School basketball with BJ and Brandan. He was 3rd on the depth chart but ended up having to start in the 2 or 3 game early season tournament in Connecticut. He looked like a kid next to the tall Big 10 center he went up against. The guy also had to log some significant minutes for one reason or another throughout the season. I think the guy's name was Stephan Vassor. I'm not ragging on the guy by stating any of this. He always gave it his all, realized his limitations, played within his means, and under the circumstances that's all ODU, Jeff, and the fans could ask for at the time.

What he's trying to get through to you is that players 7, 8, 9, etc. aren't necessarily playing "garbage time" minutes game after game. They frequently ARE part of the "rotation" even if their part is just 2 - 4 minutes a half.

Or they could be forced to play due to injuries. They should have played the lions share of the minutes last night. If the bench can’t beat VWU then maybe it’s time to part ways with them at the end of the season. No reason for our starters to play at all that game.

As if all of our starters have been killing it in every game this season. Just sayin'.

We have hosted them recently in exhibitions and it normally gets ugly in the second half. So this should be a good game for the young and new guys to get some burn. Hope to see lots of OConnell, Long and Shanu.

You have the hot hand. The game is in the new year but don’t forget to keep us rolling!

His numbers are upsurd, he needs to further cut down on his fouling and we need to figure out a way to get him 24-28 minutes per game.

PER- 36.5
RB%- 20.8
Blk%- 11.9

Per 100 possessions, he's averaging 37 points, 21 rebounds, and 6 blocks. Not bad for an undersized 5 playing against low level CAA, MEAC, and D3 teams.

FIFY.

Conveniently forgot about Maryland and VCU, huh?

VCU has 2 double digit wins vs. top 100 teams (Utah State by 16 and Memphis by 11), but since they had that 1 game where they won a close one, they aren't good.

But I heard Mike Rhoades isn’t nearly as good of a coach as Jeff Jones so now I don’t know what to believe lol
