I think we have to aim higher than Reeves or even John Grass. Those are fall back candidates in case more experienced coaches decline. If it comes to that. I'm still hopeful Clark stays.

Once he gets out from under the protective wing of the independent BOT, he may find he has more bosses on his back than he had in the uA system.

WTF are you talking about? Seriously. WTF? At the risk of derailing, please list for me who in Montgomery is pulling the strings in Auburn. Because Jimmy Rane isn't in Montgomery.

Montgomery doesn't have to be a person's residence for them to exercise political power in Alabama. The Auburn University's BOT is appointed from that power center and every legislator and their power brokers around the state have the reach to touch Auburn's administration in ways they can't in Tuscaloosa. How did Rane and Lowder get on the AU BOT? The governor appointed them. The governor can't do that at Bama nor any UA campus.

I hate to break it to you, but our legislators aren't nearly as powerful as you think they are. They might've been 60 years ago, but they aren't now. You've got the whole thing backwards to be honest. There's a handful of people around Auburn who pull the strings, and the governor appoints who they tell her to appoint. To say that the place is run out of Montgomery is just detached from reality.

Fact. My Aubie wife also went to Prattville, her senior year was Clark's first year there. Her little brother played on his first championship team. She was actually the one who told me that Clark would be successful when I was skeptical. And she will tell you that Clark turned that place into a pipeline to Tuscaloosa. Auburn never stood a chance at getting a recruit out of there. So, if he says Auburn is his "dream job," I'd chalk that up to coach-speak. And that's fair. If you want the gig, you've got to say all the right things.

I wonder how that changed though with his front row seat of the BOT shenanigans during the shutdown. Maybe he's changed his thinking and now wants direct revenge.

We ***** and moan constantly about running a modern offense. Our QB's have gone from Ryan Leaf to Peyton Manning compared to what Malzahn has done with his. That would be one of the last people I would want to hire as HC right now.

I too am still hopeful that things work out here and Clark opens next season leading the team out at the new stadium.

Right. I’d hope we’d gauge interest in the Coaching market with all of the new stuff we’ve got rather than saying “I don’t have time for this, here’s your promotion”

I see it going two ways, Clark will be forced to retain Steele or he’ll take Reeves with him. Reeves could still go either way and be an LB coach.

Grass has cooled on me.

Exactly. If we hadn't built anything we could still probably hire an FCS coach. Let's see who our shiny new digs might attract.

Based on some stuff I'm seeing, part of the UAB staff may be left hanging if this happens.

If you want to go out of the box, how about the coach from Thompson. Similar to the UTSA hire

I read somewhere that Steele had a $5 mil buyout. Getting 2.5 per year over 3 years

How much higher could we raise Clark’s salary if he doesn’t like not being able to hire his own staff freely at Auburn?

Venables supposedly interviewed but most don’t expect him to accept if offered

Did anybody hear about the supposed 430 press conference?
If it was scheduled and didn’t happen, maybe that’s a good sign

It was posted on Auburn's 247 board that we're calling our big donors to raise money to keep Clark:
