Clark Lea reminds me of Pat Fitzgerald’s placement at Northwestern. Young, alum, from the area, defensive specialist and has a strong history of success coaching defense. However, the last DC hired as a head coach from ND did not fair well at all. You could say he encountered a disastrous ConnFLict.

True about Diaco, but coaches are individuals from unique backgrounds. Just because a lot of New England Patriots assistants have flopped elsewhere didn't mean that Brian Flores was doomed to fail, in fact he's doing a good job with the Dolphins. Also throw in that Kelly has some previous assistants who've had success (Butch Jones, Matt Lefluer, Chuck Martin) and coming from ND shouldn't give any reason for pause.

Vandy was able to benefit from a weak East during a chunk of the 2010s, traditional powers like Florida and Tennessee were down and that impacts them quite a bit. Once Georgia, UF, and even Kentucky started on their way up it really makes things difficult on them beyond their current limitations. They need to make a good hire obviously, but also need to bring facilities on par with the likes of Northwestern and schedule cupcakes in non-conference play so it only takes a couple SEC wins to go bowling. Its not a great recipe, but if they play the same game as their SEC peers they'll lose every time.

I agree. Clark Lea should not even receive a phone call from any AD looking for a head coach.

Agreed, he is a overrated hack who cannot lead a program. He should wallow at ND for another 5 years or so.

Do you think Lea could do well at Vanderbilt, Domer1978?

Will be fascinating to see how many openings there end up being. Will schools have the financial support to pay big buyouts during a pandemic? South Carolina already did. I’m sure there will be others. I’m confident many schools give staffs one more year.

Given the overall dire economic situation, the best bets for making a change are:
(1) Places where boosters have a track record of spending insane amounts of money to fire and hire football coaches.
(2) Coaches who are tired of losing so much, think the situation is hopeless, and make a deal to reduce their buyout and/or have it paid off over a long period of time.

Tennessee and Auburn fit the first category. VT doesn't have the track record, but I wouldn't completely rule out their boosters putting up big money to make a change.

Illinois and Arizona *might* fit the second category.

Texas Tech doesn't fit either category, but if/when they do make a change, their obvious candidate is at SMU.

Louisville may not have a vacancy just yet, but it's hard to see Satterfield there for very long.

Shane Beamer son of VT coach Frank Beamer hired at South Carolina after Satterfield and Napier turned them down. Don't really see this as a top notch hire or an improvement over Muschamp who they just fired. Guess we'll have to see. Did South Carolina think they had Satterfield lined up when they pulled the plug on Muschamp earlier this year. If this had been a normal season and South Carolina had gone 6 & 6 with a bowl bid, would USC (EAST) have eaten Muschamp's $13.3 million dollar buyout, plus Bobo's approximate $1.5 million buyout, plus the buyout for the remaining coaches. 03-shhhh 04-jawdrop 05-stirthepot 07-coffee3

Yes, I think he is a very talented coach. But Vandy is a real tough job, so patience will be needed.

RE: Coaching changes 2020-21
IMO Vandy needs someone like Tommy Bowden. Bowden runs a clean program, would improve recruiting immediately and most especially he'd push for the facility improvements that Vandy desperately needs. He'd likely be only a short term solution, but the program would be on better footing for his replacements.

The question is does Tommy want to get back into coaching after being out for so long, but a job at Vandy where there's not as much pressure at another P5 school might be enticing.

Just don't let him bring in Rob Spence as OC.

Good to hear your thoughts. If we get Lea, I will be hopeful.

Good luck to the Irish the rest of the way. Your team is strong.

TB had a very good run but I see he has been out of coaching for 12 years. He is 66. Still, VU could do much worse. If he is interested in coming to Nashvillle, we need to listen to him.

It really blew up in his face what happened with South Carolina. I could see him still leaving Louisville after this whole fiasco. You basically shot yourself in the foot for recruiting.

Is it really any different than what Petrino did when he was there the first time with Auburn though? Hell, Louisville brought him back a second time AFTER he did leave for greener pastures. They'd be stupid as hell to get rid of Satterfield over this. At this point he's the ACC coach that scares me the most.

If coaches aren’t honest, they get $hit on. If coaches are honest like Satterfield, they still get $hit on.

Apparently, Urban turned down overtures from Texas. Not sure there is any better and realistic candidate available to replace with Herman. Looking like he will stick around next year.

Not sure that the prior post had any validity, but if so, and UT is looking, I would push for Brian Kelly. I have always respected his coaching abilities. He has also shown good recruiting abilities with the restrictions from ND. Personally, I hope UT keeps the status quo.

https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/south-...5-million/

Quote:While South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner goes through the process of negotiating a buyout, the contract apparently guarantees Muschamp all $13 million even if he elects to take another job, according to The State reporter Ben Breiner.

Muschamp’s contract doesn’t have any mitigation language in it, thus enabling him to not have his salary subtracted from the buyout payment. This is a unique situation because over two-thirds of Power 5 head coaches have mitigation requirements, per Marquette’s Marty Greenberg.

Muschamp’s contract currently has him paid 75 percent of his salary for the remainder of the deal that ends in 2024. Tanner is actively exploring the school’s options.

South Carolina gonna South Carolina.

I was at the A-State game vs USA. There couldn’t have been 4k people. I sat on the upper visitors side and it was complete sections of like 3 dozen rows empty.

3-6 at that point, thanksgiving weekend in what was SUPPOSED to be the season finale coming in with the first four game conference losing streak since joining the Sun Belt.

I was not there. I'm in the loge boxes in front of the press box ended up paying $900 per ticket used.

Class move. A fresh start is probably the best thing for both Anderson and A State.
