PSAC Contraction
Five PSAC football teams...to two? (Mansfield plays sprint football.)

"A transformation of the Pennsylvania’s state university system will continue to be explored with a look at “integrating” six universities into two separate institutions without any campus being closed.

The State System of Higher Education’s governing board on Wednesday affirmed the ongoing feasibility of integrating California, Clarion and Edinboro into one institution and Lock Haven, Mansfield and Bloomsburg into another one."

RE: PSAC Contraction
Have to wonder what IUP thinks about this.

After doing some research, I discovered that West Chester and IUP are the biggest universities in the system, and will be unaffected. For reference, West Chester is roughly the same size as Bowling Green University and IUP is roughly the same size as Coastal Carolina University.

RE: PSAC Contraction
The PSAC is so big that losing 3 football schools would go mostly unnoticed.

Under the proposal, the PSAC wouldn't be losing just three schools-they actually would be losing six!!!!

No, it’s a net loss of three. Five football and one non-football school would consolidate into two schools, both of which you’d assume would offer football.

RE: PSAC Contraction
I see a lot of backlash from alumni from these schools coming and a huge reduction in alumni donations if this goes forward. Rutgers went through this when the state tried to rename the school the University of NJ a while back. There was so much back lash and threats of donors withholding money that the issue was dropped rather quickly. The politicians went down the river and applied the name to Trenton State. Surprised Lock Haven and Bloomsburg are mention as the state has done extensive renovation projects at those schools along with East Stroudsburg, Kutztown, Shippensburg, and IUP. The only schools that I hear that are having financial problems in that system are California and Mansfield. I don't know what is going on at Edinboro, Slippery Rock , and Clarion. Edinboro was going through a massive upgrade years ago when I visited it with my kids, Slippery was basic 1950's with its buildings and campus, and Clarion was a nice smaller school in Midwest PA. The only school I was not impressed with in the system was Mansfield where the buildings were deteriorating 20 years ago. Lock Haven wasn't very impressive then either but it was undergoing a massive renewal project when I went through there with my last son on college tour duty. West Chester and Millersville stood on the first college tour too. 07-coffee3

When did they propose changing Rutgers to the University of New Jersey? I would love for that to happen. People were actually against changing the name? I guess if you're an alum of the school you're proud of the name but if you're not the name has no meaning and it would make more sense to name it after the state. Unlike Clemson or Auburn, it's not even the town, Rutgers is in Piscataway. If the state is funding the school, they should be able to name it what they want and you would want future students to want to go there so they're more important than alumni.

It's usually some politician looking for attention; in that case, it was NJ governor Jim McGreevey. The compromise was a full name which reads: "Rutgers: The State University of New Jersey".

This is similar to the fight over renaming Virginia Tech (officially Virginia Polytechnic Institute) to "Virginia State". The official name is now the "Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University."
