Florida State is so bad they wouldn't even be considered for an invite.

Southeastern Conference.

I don't see one "D" in those words.

Ironically, out of all 10 FBS conference names, only one of them has the letter "d":
Atlantic Coast
American Athletic
Big Ten
Big Twelve
Conference USA
Mid-American
Mountain West
Pacific Twelve
Southeastern
Sun Belt

I'll leave it as an exercise for the reader whether to count

The change in Alabama's offense has garnered all the attention, but the defense has declined the last couple of years. Alabama points given up by year and national defensive ranking since Saban turned the team around in 2008:

08 ... 14.3 (7)
09 ... 11.7* (2)
10 ... 13.5 (3)
11 ... 8.2* (1)
12 ... 10.9* (1)
13 ... 13.9 (4)
14 ... 18.4 (6)
15 ... 15.1* (2)
16 ... 13.0 (1)
17 ... 11.9* (1)
18 ... 18.1 (12)
19 ... 18.6 (13)

So what we see is that the last two years, Alabama has been outside the top 10 in scoring defense, that had never happened.

The five times Alabama has won the national title under Saban, they have ranked #1 in defense 3 times and #2 twice. When he won the title at LSU in 2003, LSU was #1 in scoring defense. The only time a Saban team has ranked #1 or #2 in defense and not won the title was 2016, when they lost to Clemson at the buzzer in the national title game.

Defense has won championships for Saban and his defenses are sinking.
