RE: Power rankings 9/27
With all these cancellations, and players missing games .... who knows who will win the conference this year.
That said I think the top 4 are:
1. App State
2. Louisiana
3. Coastal Carolina
4. Arkansas State
3 and 4 will be determined Saturday
1 and 2 will be determined Next Wednesday
Everyone else in some order (not sure what)
Last. ULM
I know I am looking through App State colored lenses, but until App is beaten by an SBC team I am going to give App State the nod.

Got destroyed by Mormons and still ranked higher than many SBC teams...
SP+ is a very objective, analytical system that fares well against the ultimate arbitor of relative team strength - the betting line. So study up or shuttup. And I mean that in the nicest way . . .

Looks very objective.
A-State plays #30 in the list a good game on the road and again on the road defeats #54.
Our ranking is #74
Easy to understand.

No money. No prestige. Makes it darned hard for a coach to recruit really good athletes year in and year out. I think he's done an outstanding job with the resources at hand. But if the ant keeps pushing that boulder up the mountain long enough that boulder is going to roll back over him eventually.

Idaho had same issue. There's the saying of doing more with less, but there is a cutoff of when less just can't provide more. If ULM can't find a way to increase their budget, which aids in increased recruiting trips etc, then status quo is what you can expect. Marshall has never been at the top of any FBS conference (MAC, CUSA) while being a member, usually in the middle or damn near last, but we had just enough to recruit properly etc and be competitive. So where is that fine line, who knows what it is but ULM is below it, always has been.

ULM is in a financial bind. Every public in Louisiana is. La Tech and UL are going to take a massive hit to our athletic budgets. I’m hearing as much as $7-9M drop for the Cajuns.

Wouldn't put a lot of stock in that, they have Marshall ranked below App....might be due to App playing 3 games and Marshall just 2 at this point, who knows.

Shesh, if ULM drops any more than they are I am not sure how they will support FBS ball, they already had the lowest budget in FBS. Is this due to COVID or ....?

It'll be interesting to see how this impacts university systems financially residing in states choosing a "more responsible" reopening. Based on the results and the election these states and universities could be in a tight spot if the chips fall the wrong way. Athletics will be on the chopping blocks first. Interesting to think about what side you would rather be on based the outcome. Could be catastrophic either way. Tough times indeed.

Do people not understand probabilities? If Marshall and App played this game 3 times, do you believe Marshall would win all three? SP+ is a predictive measure.
App dropped a TD, fumbled another, missed a FG etc. Just because you beat a team once does not mean you are objectively the better team.

I would like to add Pythagorean's Argument: If A beats B, B beats C, and C beats A, how do you rank them?

Covid likely being the biggest culprit. Athletics' budgets for the public U's in Louisiana depend heavily on games actually happening, and without attendance restrictions, as ticket sales and other game day related revenue make up a big part of our budgets. Unlike some of your conference-mates, like the F_U's, who depend very heavily on student fees to float their athletic budgets. In UL's case giving is also down due to both Covid and the massive downturn in the oilfield, which has been going on for years now, but got worse in 2020.

WTF, ok, you realize the other team can usually claim the same crap right? I didn't say we'd be app 3 times, but you don't know we wouldn't either. We dropped a TD, went for it instead of kicking the FG etc etc as well, smothered you on defense, it still evens out as I pointed out in another post. You got away with another turnover would be as well when your QB got blasted and fumbled the ball straight up in the air, but your man got the ball back being in the right place at the right time. You wanna talk about who the better team was? really? I usually come on here and have civil discussion but your BS just blew that up. You were beat in the trenches, you were beat in the running game, you were beat on special teams. What part of all of that makes Marshall not the better team? and you think that was a fluke, go watch the first game too, you will see it was not. But whatever. We were the better team for the day, for the season is still up for grabs.
