Saturday, both App and Marshall will be “rueing the day we left the Southern Conference,” in the SEC time slot.

Imagine what our old SoCon mates at Furman, Citadel, UTC, and WCU are thinking with App and Marshall on CBS and GS playing on ESPN this weekend! I know the circumstances are different this year, but there are still about 35 games to choose from and ours are getting the airtime.

Marshall played Ohio State in 2004 a 24-21 loss, lost on a 55 yard FG from Mike Nugent with .02 on the clock. The game was on ABC.

I knew in 1988 when Joan C Edwards stadium was proposed that we would be going IA soon, the stadium opened in 1991 and we were in the MAC in 1997.

At the time we jumped I thought the next 2 programs to jump would be McNeese State and Appy State. At the time McNeese was on fire now they are a middle of the pack team in a bloated Southland conference. It took Appy and GA Southern 17 years after Marshall but they eventually took the leap.

I may be in the minority, but I'm glad we jumped up when we did rather than in the 90's. The Miracle on the Mountain, the three FCS titles, the Michigan game--none would have happened if App moved up when Marshall did. Even if we had beaten Michigan as an FBS team, it wouldn't have been as super historic or impactful. Heck, App might have overlooked a QB like Armanti Edward's as an FBS program, so we might have never had The Great One.

By the time App left, there was no unfinished business left. The move up has been an indisputable success.

Good points - I think we left at the right time...but we did wait as long as we needed to be sure we came in ready to play FBS football from the start.

AppFaninCAAland - I too was in Boone that fateful rainy night. For some reason, I just remember being miserable as I exited the stadium where YOSEF and Co. were giving us the #1 sign! Much fonder for me would be that late season game in 1996 (w Randy Moss) and a hard fought victory... Gonna be electric on Saturday in The Joan!

I can still see Moss in those green & white striped socks running up and down the turf at KBS...

Super close ball game. Main difference was The Freak, on one particular play. He did a skinny post & ended up just splitting the 2 defenders for a long TD.

I'm glad App left when we did, otherwise we'd probably be in CUSA instead.

Don't take what I'm about to say here wrong. I get what you're saying and I enjoyed each of those things you mentioned as much as anyone, but who knows what could have been had we remained 1-A. When word of 1-AA began gaining steam in the mid 70's App's administration was firmly in the we want to remain at the highest level camp. We were on par with ECU from a football standpoint, attendance was booming and donations were flowing into the program. When Chancellor Wey, the guy who was driving the train, retired in 1979 all that came to a screeching halt. We got Mr Not Motivated, Do Nothing John Tomas. He pulled back the reins and stopped all the momentum dead in it's tracks. The stadium which was supposed to have been 30,000 seats wound up 18K. Vice Chancellor Bob Sneed was all about keeping App a small mountain teacher training school and put in charge of fundraising. The Yosef Club was hit with unbelievable restrictions and people eventually lost interest. We were basically in the doldrums until Ken Peacock arrived on the scene then 2005, 06, 07 and MOST importantly Michigan happened.

You think CBS choose the game because of the Huntington market?

The joke is CUSA choose schools in cities not programs with good football programs the last round of expansion. That thesis has backfired.

Maybe I should have been more clear. CBS didn't choose one of the bigger market schools that C-USA invited more because of market size and "potential" than actual results. CBS instead chose a school from little market Huntington and small town Boone. They didn't choose to air a school from the Miami area, Charlotte, Norfolk, Nashville area, Birmingham, Dallas area, Houston, San Antonio, or El Paso.

I didn't put it that way initially because I thought being concise and simple would be funnier and because I was being a smart aleck.

I honestly feel if this fumble did not happen in the semi's v Furman in 2005, we are not where we are today. This started the whole run in the 2000's.

I remember people mocking Marshall for taking the jump at the time, but there were also plenty of us wondering why we weren't going with them.

I honestly feel if this fumble did not happen in the semi's v Furman in 2005, we are not where we are today. This started the whole run in the 2000's.

Ironically, I feel like TXST kneeling it in the Semi's against UNI three times in a row with the game tied, three timeouts, and over a minute on the clock, to have been the opposite catalyst for the Bobcat program. Nothing but letdowns since that OT loss.
