Poison Ivy League
We all know that the Ivy League is a consortium of expensive, highly selective, academically prestigious, elite universities. But what if there was a parallel organization for DI’s lowest rated, least reputable schools?

What 8 schools would be in it?

I don't follow. Half of those schools I would contest are quality schools by nearly all metrics.

What about any of these schools would consider them lowest rated? Four are in the top 100 of the US News survey:

Wisconsin: #46
Florida State: #57
SMU: #64
Texas A&M: #70
-------------
Arizona St. #117
Oklahoma: #132
Memphis: #272
Wichita St. #293

My understanding is that the K-12 public schools are the ones on the struggle bus.

I haven't read much suggesting the universities are GREAT, but I haven't read any publications suggesting they're bad, either.

I read a few years ago that, at least at the time, Wisconsin had the highest federally funded research budget in the country. They and Texas A&M are in the freaking AAU.

What gives? Is this just a list of party schools or something, because those are some good schools you listed regardless of how drunk the undergrads get.

Mississippi #162 USN&WR, Mississippi State #211. They are the two worst ranked in the SEC. Southern Miss is ranked "#293-381".

If the K-12 schools in Mississippi struggle, where do you think the Mississippi schools draw the majority of their students from and is a coincidence they will be low ranked? Most I hear about Mississippi is it's a state people don't want to live in and people want to get out of. That being said, do you think top students from out of state would want to go to Mississippi and Mississippi State? Doubt it. So I'd guess the top students in Mississippi go to out of state schools, the next best go to Mississippi, the rejects of Mississippi go to Mississippi State, etc. That tells you everything you need to know about their academics. And again, you wonder why I don't respect the SEC as much as everyone else and hate that they are glorified as much as they are.

Baylor is a better school that people realize. #79 nationally, $1.3 billion endowment. Behind Rice (#17), but right between SMU (#64) and TCU (#97).

The Division I schools of Texas are perceived (academically, that is) roughly in this order:
1. Rice
2. Texas
2. Texas A&M
4. SMU
5. Baylor
6. TCU
7. Texas Tech
8. North Texas
9. Houston
10. Texas State
11. UT-San Antonio
12. Incarnate Word
13. UT-Arlington
14. UT-El Paso
15. Stephen F Austin St.
16. Sam Houston St.
17. Houston Baptist
18. Lamar
19. Prairie View A&M
20. Texas Southern
21. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
22. UT-Rio Grande Valley

ASU is known first and foremost as a big-time party school.

The next five schools on that list have a long history with the NCAA. In addition, the poster is a Texas fan. :-)

FSU has had a checkered reputation at times as well, but so have a lot of schools. Wisconsin? I have no clue, other than they were a bottom feeder until around 1990 when Barry Alvarez came to town.

That's pretty close to on target. Rice is at the top. UT and A&M are right behind them. SMU, Baylor and TCU are right there together. I'd switch Baylor with SMU, but there's not a whole lot of space between those three.

I'm not sure about Incarnate Word, but that's just my lack of knowledge. They'd be no lower than HBU. I'd move A&M-CC to around where Lamar is. By the time we're down this far on the list, we're grasping at straws. Good list.

A few subcategories:

For-profit and/or snake-handling Jesus-freak schools
That may or may not be a fair description, but it's an accurate description of how most of academia sees them. And that matters in conference realignment
Grand Canyon, Liberty.

Historically troubled schools.
Have been kicked out of conferences before, and/or almost dropped from Division I but didn't.
Chicago State (kicked out of the Summit before they changed their name)
UT-Rio Grand Valley (UTPA was kicked out of I think the Sun Belt)
University of New Orleans (almost went Division III, didn't).

Schools with semi-recent semi-near death experiences
South Carolina State
Western Illinois

The Very Poorest HBCUs in Division I
Mississippi Valley State
Maryland--Eastern Shore

Not counting Temple being kicked out of Big East Football--there's a difference between being kicked out of a big-money conference and being asked to leave the AMCU-8 or the TAAC. Also not counting VCU or Virginia Tech being kicked out of the Metro conference right before it dissolved because that was a screwjob)

I also didn't count BYU on the "too much Jesus" list because BYU has some academic credibility that Jerry Falwell University doesn't have. Not to mention probably over 100 denominational Division I schools that don't get looked down upon.

The bottom 8 are definitely all HBCU's, and its not even close. Doesn't matter if its academic or athletic related.

Howard, Spelman, and Moorehouse shouldn't be lumped in.

The Atlanta schools are D2. Howard wouldn't be on the list but a bunch of public HBCU's that are D1 in name only would be.
