If Memphis Tiger fan can abide by the rules, not make rebellious asses of themselves (especially on teevee) and there are not an overwhelming amount of outbreaks that are the result of this fan participation experiment....just maybe we can relax some of the guidelines.
A lot of people all over the country are watching.
Okay.... so how is that going to extrapolate out? I've already deferred my season tickets to next year to "make room" for the 4600 there tonight.
It won’t. During the Thursday SCHD briefing they were asked about relaxing the restrictions if numbers met the guidelines for community. They specifically said no! Large events are super spreaders and the 12 ft SD would remain in place for the season.
I miss being there. I am resolved to the fact we are doing what we will do all season.
This is one of the things that bothers me about the decision. We took a super conservative position with the 12 ft rule. Fine.
If it went off without a hitch, there should be a plan to gradually scale up.
4K this game, 6k the next, 8k, then possibly max out at 12k.
We should have reverse trip wires. Declaring that this will be the plan for the rest of the season is not data-based. Case counts could go way down. Case counts could go way up. A game by game approach makes the most sense to me.
I’m surprised the school hasn’t pushed back at all
That right there is what disturbs me the most.

Geez. If there had been more fans in the stadium and a COVID outbreak occurred and then traced back to the gathering at the game, what could have happened? 1. No more fans at all, or 2. Worse, no more football. Some folks just simply can’t be satisfied or they think they cannot join the 185,000 who died or the 6+ million who have been impacted by the virus.

I dunno. Maybe the school has ideas of in person classes this year though it seems doubtful...Maybe the school doesn’t have enough quarantine dorm space if there are multiple outbreaks. That’s what shut NCState down.
Maybe people are really worried about the flu season which is coming. There are so many unknowns.

Like in Portland? Seattle? New York? LA? Half the country has had no concern about outbreaks there, but now 8,000 or 12,000 fans in a massive stadium, with 100FT social distancing is going to cause an outbreak? That is hilarious.
The use of the characterization "rebellious" is extra hilarious.

You mean decisions shouldn't be modeled after West Tennessee and the entire state of Tennessee, that has a death rate 7 times LESS than other states that have supposedly handled the virus "beautifully?"
That makes perfect sense.

The funniest thing is that you actually seem to genuinely believe what you are typing.
USA DEATHS PER MILLION STATE RANKINGS
33 Tennessee
34 Washington
45 Oregon
You guys are killing me. We are living in a bizarro world.

Interesting that you introduce the word "great" and then blame selfish Americans. When you look at the two biggest issues in your country, the demographic that dominates both at 80% are white people between the ages of 18 and 35. You see them in parks, at beaches, and at massive protests at schools and on the streets.
According to all data, this demographic votes at around 20% for the side that is using the word "great" as a slogan. So there's that.

yes, thanks for making sure Memphis football was able to safely have a season while the PAC, B1G, MWC, and MAC sit at home watching us play on prime time TV.
I choose to be thankful for having a season at all, even if only 4,600 can attend live.
lol
The AAC is responsible for us having football - not the SCHD.
It amazes me the people who have lined up to kiss the feet of a government bureaucracy that has without doubt made mistakes time and again.
Talk about selfish? Talk about SCHD decisions that are not for the greater good of the community.

The school did push back, but there was only so far they could go.
Otherwise, you've outlined a big problem for those who tout SCHD's expertise and scientific decision-making. That didn't use the science to make this decision. They just came down hard with overly conservative guidelines in a classic CYA move. They used a study on singing INDOOR AND WITHOUT MASKS as their basis. And then they just pulled the 12-ft number out of the air.

Or we could be like every other program in the country that has allowed fans - and use the 6-ft, 25% rule.
Besides, those are completely different regions of the country. They have nothing to do with the downward trend in Tennessee. You're better off comparing us to UTK, MTSU, Vandy, and Old Miss.

We are a school in a large metro, those other schools in our conference are also in large metros. Perfectly valid examples. Vandy is also a valid comparison, they haven’t decided to allow fans yet.
The other three aren’t urban universities, what makes what they do relevant to Memphis?
Half our conference is playing with no fans, at least we get fans.

You consider ECU to be in a large metro area, but not Knoxville or MTSU?
Hotspots are regional - not conference based. Attendance by conference in vastly different geographical regions are irrelevant.
There are basically 2 options being considered all around the country. Either play with no fans, or play with 25% (6-ft distancing) capacity. Except the SCHD must know better than anyone else.
