98. ROSS BOWERS, NORTHERN ILLINOIS

Bowers first entered college in 2015 at Cal but didn’t see the field until 2017. He was fairly average as the Golden Bears' starter that year, producing a 69.7 passing grade, with his four best games coming in the back half of the season. Bowers played in only one game in 2018 before coming to Northern Illinois in 2019 and struggling, as his passing grade lowered to 59.4. Bowers' positively graded throw rank of 111th says a lot about both him as a passer and the Northern Illinois offense as a whole.

This is about where I expected Bowers to be. I like Bowers, but the Huskies really need a playmaker at QB again. I’m hope Fletcher is that guy.

Let's put it this way. If Justin Fields was throwing to our mediocre receiving core, he wouldn't be pushing a petition to play this season! Point being: I think it's hard to tell whether Bowers can be a true playmaker, and achieve a higher ranking, until he is throwing to guys who can get open and catch the ball when they do. Of course, not having Tears on the field will help!

The O-line wasn't too good either, Bowers took a beating back there. The offense has a chance to be better across the board this year and that will help Bowers. He needs to stop throwing it to the other team too.

Tell you the truth, I don't think our OC did Bowers any favors. We had so much success with throwing to the TEs but we didn't use it as bread and butter like I thought we should. Our TEs ran the ball so well after the catch, too. But we hardly took advantage of that either. I thought we should've had the double TE formation as base and threw the ball often to the TEs and it would've opened up the running game as well since Brinkman and Crawford were good blockers as well. Just didn't see a lot of that. That was all we did in the second half of the Ohio game and we just tore into them. Then after that we went to it more but we were running the ball almost exclusively out of the double TE formation, which was really disappointing to me. But with Brinkman gone, we'll never know if Ediness would have made that adjustment or not. Hopefully, the coaches will really impress us when and if we ever play.
