Throwback from 1982 - Washington Post: UAB Upsets Ralph Sampson & No. 3 Virginia
Excerpt:

Virginia Coach Terry Holland picked the wrong time to lose his temper tonight. His unnecessary tantrum late in the second half handed away two crucial points and triggered the third-ranked Cavaliers' stunning tumble out of the NCAA basketball playoffs.

Alabama-Birmingham's 68-66 victory sent the Blazers (25-5) into the Mideast Regional final against Louisville at 12:40 p.m. Saturday. The winner will play the West Regional champion in the national semifinals March 27 in New Orleans.

UAB upsets #3 Virginia and Ralph Sampson

1982 Men's NCAA Basketball Tourney

1982 NCAA Tournament | Bracket
Champion: North Carolina

Most Outstanding Player: James Worthy, North Carolina

Final Four: North Carolina, Houston, Louisville, Georgetown

Shining Moments:
Michael Jordan jumpstarted his legacy with his baseline jumper to give North Carolina the championship over Georgetown. On the ensuing possession, Hoyas’ guard Fred Brown passed the ball directly to Worthy.

On his seventh trip to the Final Four, North Carolina coach Dean Smith finally won his first championship. He had gone to three straight Final Fours from 1967-69, but had never broken through to get a title.

Top-seeded Virginia was upset in the regional semifinals by UAB, which held Ralph Sampson to 8-for-18 shooting (although he did finish with 19 points and 21 rebounds).

Two facts: The 1982 NCAA tournament was the first to be televised by CBS. It had been televised by NBC in previous years. Also, the title game crowd of more than 61,000 was the largest to watch a basketball game in the Western Hemisphere.

Midwest
