Spring football: 4-game "exhibition" idea
Interesting idea floated here (see link) to allow home-home conference games with two non-conference opponents (4 games total) -- and geographically nearby -- as "exhibitions" attached to spring practice. Story kind of backs into it, so the pros/cons etc. start further down under the subhead "After Spring Ball." Games would reduce travel costs, allow better virus control, make money (replacing free spring game) but not count toward season record. Coaches could use as practice/teaching games.

Anyway, read if you want and comment. FYI.

I respect and admire Urban Meyer. He has insight I will never have. But if you do a 4 game spring pre-season, that would not leave enough time for a regular spring football season unless you eliminate the bye-week and the CCGs and playoffs.

This idea cancels the 2020 schedule completely, not just moving it to spring. It would be replaced with four exhibition games built in as an ending to the regular spring practice. Tickets would be sold, concessions available, etc., just like "regular" games, but with an altered game structure to allow for coaching, playing different units, etc. The 2020 schedule would just be gone, which it might be anyway.

Not sure if I like the exhibition game alternative. These would be 4 "games" that would not count. Perhaps fun to attend, but they are meaningless except as an intense practice. Assuming the 2021 season would start as normal, why risk injuries in these spring exhibitions? Our players already fall like dominoes from spring and summer practice injuries. Why increase the risk for more or more serious injuries?

I'm not supporting the idea, just posted it because it was there. Right on about injuries, but I could see one game against an "outside" opponent instead of spring game. Also a chance for seniors to show off since the NFL is not going to move the combine or draft.

Maybe two games. Four, imo, is just an attempt to recoup money if 2020 season lost. Besides, if it was four games, you can bet Iowa's two o-o-c games would be UNI and Iowa State, not NIU.
