WAC Athletic Budgets
Update: I changed the thread name to budgets instead of fees. It appears all schools go about it differently, but the most important thing is coming up with a healthy athletic budget. Tarleton uses a fee increase and will continue to rely on donors to get to $15-20 mil for 2020-21. This is not including A&M funding for facility upgrades.

Before making the move to D1 and the WAC, Tarleton voted to nearly double it's athletic fee to $35/credit hour. We were operating for years with one of the lowest athletic fees in the Lone Star Conference at $22/credit hour.

We also got a new President just before the move up, and his main objective is to increase enrollment. Just built a new campus in Fort Worth that is predicted to nearly double enrollment over the next few years. Higher enrollment + higher athletic fees = more money to go toward salaries, recruiting, facilities, travel, etc.

That's great, but I wonder if $35/credit hour is enough to get our facilities on par with our competition. I know the A&M BOR has alotted millions for future upgrades, but that takes time to come to fruition.

So I'm curious, what is the athletic fee for your institution. And what other type of funds are used to build these impressive WAC facilities?

RE: Athletic Fees
So I looked up NMSU 2019 Athletic Budget. University transfer means they had to pull $4.4 million from another department to cover expenses. In other words, no money left over for facility upgrades.

NM State athletics FY19 revenues

University transfer: $4.4 million

State appropriations: $3.3 million

Student fees: $3.3 million

Game guarantees: $2.9 million

Aggie Athletic Club/Foundation: $1.8 million

Ticket sales: $1.5 million

Media rights: $1 million

NM State athletics FY19 expenses

Salary/benefits - Sports: $5.5 million

Travel: $3.6 million

Salary/benefits - Admin: $2.6 million

Scholarships: $2.6 million

Game day: $1.2 million

Other expenses: $1.2 million

RE: Athletic Fees
"Budget numbers rely on guarantee football games
The No. 1 reason the finances were so tight in 2019 was due to two guarantee football games (at Minnesota and BYU) that totaled $1.5 million last year in its first season as an independent program.

NM State will collect $3.8 million this season for games at Washington State ($600,000), Alabama ($1.7 million) and Mississippi ($1.5 million)"

Tarleton:
13,000 enrollment x 12-hour average semester load per student x $35 student athletic fee/credit hour = $5.46 million/semester = just over $10 million/year in student athletic fee revenue, give or take.

RE: Athletic Fees
The NMSU athletic budget is always a mystery to me and I don’t think we’ll ever see the true numbers. Back when we were fighting to stay in the SBC for football, we made our proposal seem like we had some decent money. Claiming our athletic budget was close to 26 million, which would have ranked 2nd in the Sun Belt overall and 3rd best budget for football alone. After they shot us down all of a sudden we’re broke and always trying to balance our budget every year. 18 million for fiscal year 2019 and 20 million for fiscal year 2020.

Aha! They call it the "ASNMSU" fee. Probably half the students don't even know what they're paying for lol

ASNMSU Fee (Fall/Spring 1-11 credit enrollment) $33.50
ASNMSU Fee (Summer 1-8 credit enrollment) $12.40

So, it's $33.50/credit hour capped at 11 hours.
$12 40/credit hour for Summer, capped at 8 hours.

Wow. $3.3 million/year in athletic fees with enrollment of 25,000
NMSU must have a ton of part-time students taking way less than 11 hours/semester.

With that same 25,000 enrollment Tarleton would bring in the ballpark of $20 million/year in fees alone. President Hurley is on the right track.

It's easy to see that without the FBS money/mercy games every year, NMSU would be struggling. That's scary. You guys are NEVER gonna drop down to FCS, that's clear to me now. But that also is probably why you're stuck in the WAC with other sports. The best thing that could happen for NMSU is for the WAC to start back FBS football, and give you a permanent and stable home. The teams they're bringing in now are all financially stable with big upsides (minus CSU) and will eventually grow up to NMSU level.

RE: Athletic Fees
GCU charges a student activity fee: $300 per semester.

This only applies to on-campus students in Phoenix, and only for Fall & Spring semester.

20,000 students in Phoenix paying $300/semester is $6 million per semester, or $12 million per year.

Tarleton's new fee gets them in the same ballpark as GCU with 7,000 less enrollment.

It is a combined fee that covers various student activities and programs including athletics. The athletics portion is $3.3 million. Student activities, student government costs, club/organization support and certain services for students take the remaining portion. Student funding of athletics has not been a priority at NMSU for a long time.

To have support for athletics equivalent to Tarleton's new fee, the ASNMU fee would have to be increased by a substantial amount. I do not have current figures, but if the distribution is comparable to what it was when I was familiar with it it would need to be in the neighborhood of 75%.

Below is the CBU athletic budget for 2018-2019. They are private, so getting a breakdown of fees is difficult:

Total Expenses of all Sports, Except Football and Basketball, Combined $5,750,355 $5,889,404 $11,639,759

If the WAC average is $15 mil and CBU/GCU are $23+mil, NMSU is $18 mil (with football), some schools in the conference are way under average. NMSU is barely in the black, and if they ever lose their FBS money games, things will get really tough in a hurry. I wonder why they chose to have such a low fee and instead depend heavily on FBS game payouts. COVID may force them to rethink that strategy.

For all you Dixie fans out there....

Currently hovering around $9 mil, planning to be at $12 mil by 2023-24.

They are expecting their game guarantee money to skyrocket. Rest is mostly entirely funded by student fees

I wonder how much they expect to get for guarantee games? I think the going rate for FCS teams is around 500k

Total Expenses Men's and Women's Teams $10,449,810 $7,225,896 $17,675,706
Not Allocated by Gender/Sport $5,650,767

Grand Total Expenses $23,326,473

If the WAC average is $15 mil and CBU/GCU are $23+mil, NMSU is $18 mil (with football), some schools in the conference are way under average. NMSU is barely in the black, and if they ever lose their FBS money games, things will get really tough in a hurry. I wonder why they chose to have such a low fee and instead depend heavily on FBS game payouts. COVID may force them to rethink that strategy.

The NMSU budget for 2018-2019 is $27 million. About $8.5 million spent on FBS football and about $3 million on men's basketball. The money games have helped to pay down debt and fund other programs. In 2020, they collect $2.7 million from UCLA and Florida. In 2021, $3.1 million from Alabama and Kentucky. These games are not going away anytime soon.

"Moccia's $18.7 million budget in Fiscal Year 2019 was bolstered by substantial increases in ticket sales and fundraising revenues, but it was not enough to avoid drawing from monies he would rather spend enhancing the athletics department rather than simply surviving."
