RE: DI Sports Casualties - a running list
There is no actual revenue (ticket, parking and merchandise sales; NCAA distributions; media revenues, et al) in Track and Field. What they are counting are donations and funds from the school and the athletic department allocated to support the sport. By being under budget they show a "profit". The only way they could run a true profit is if donations and endowed scholarship money is greater than the operating budget.
The numbers are inflated by removing the proportion of Athletic Department overhead budget (administrative costs, people dedicated to compliance and other roles that spend time overseeing the sport, plus interest payments on facilities, etc) from the sport expenses. Mind you this is less for minor sports, but still a chunk of the expenses not counted on the ledger.
The numbers are further fudged by presuming the school would be unable to fill vacant slots with non-athletes, even though virtually every FBS school turns away qualified in state students in order to sell seats to foreign students (meaning they have replacements in hand ... in the case of the University of California campuses over 40,000 such qualified students are turned away).
So it's a lot of funny accounting going on to show a profit for sports that sell no tickets and derive no media revenue. When the Department wants to tout their success they point to the dog and pony show profit, but when the budget cannot be balanced (i.e., the Institution says we are not giving you an extra $1m to cover your shortfall this year) then the show profit vanishes and the sport is axed immediately. Clearly they keep two books (maybe three at shadier operations).
If schools had their druthers they'd just have Football and Men's Basketball as compensated sports and drop all the others, as they are really window dressing.

“I was caught completely by surprise,” Zack said. “They had been told in various team meetings that San Diego State University was not contemplating cutting sports. Because I was told that or I heard that in many meetings, I relayed that message to them anytime they asked me.
“They’re devastated, they’re crying, they’re upset. They’re dumbfounded how Title IX, which is known for the Yale women’s rowing team and their protests, is being used against them.”
It is the first sport cut by SDSU since the 2001 elimination of men’s volleyball, which won the school’s only Division I national championship in 1973.
I've read of them going and recruiting athletes who don't row because there aren't enough quality women rowers. Give a scholarship to a 5'10" or 6'0" women and teach them to row. Its one of the most widespread sports that is there only because of Title IX.

And now because SDSU has more male students on campus, that women's sport has got to go. There's also nothing left to cut on the men's side

If equal is the standard, I’m glad these athletes get to share in the experience of their sport being dropped like thousands of men have. It was very unfair that men got to enjoy that feeling and so few women did.

McNeese State cut men’s and women’s golf today
Pending realignment situations within the Southland, the league could’ve just lost the automatic bids in men’s and women’s golf (if McNeese is joined by Texas institutions and Central Arkansas in not being golfing schools - if they leave the WAC)

A bit of welcome good news as UNO pushes back against the downward trajectory COVID and Title IX have put men's swimming and diving on.
https://omavs.com/news/2020/12/11/genera...iving.aspx
Quote:OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha Athletics announced today that it will compete in men's swimming & diving beginning with the 2021-22 season.
The Mavericks will be the fifth Summit League school to sponsor the sport for men. The league also has two affiliate members.
"This is a great opportunity for local student-athletes to continue competing in swimming and diving at the highest level while remaining close to home," said Trev Alberts, Vice Chancellor of Athletics. "Omaha will have the only men's Division I swimming and diving program in the state, and we think we can build a team that will be competing for Summit League championships in the very near future.

Dartmouth has re-considered its plan to drop M/W swimming, M/W golf, and M rowing: https://news.dartmouth.edu/news/2021/01/...ws-planned
The school faced a Title IX suit as a result of the gender disparity that these cuts would have left, and after a review concluded that the potential plaintiffs were right. The school will commission three reviews of (1) Title IX compliance by an outside law firm; (2) NCAA compliance by the Ivy League; and (3) accounting/financial processes within the athletic department by PriceWaterhouse.
This comes on the heels of this story by Global Golf Post: https://www.globalgolfpost.com/more/dart...tory-2-2/. The golf programs, in particular, were endowed and paid for by the alumni and were majority non-white, so the stated reasons (budget, favoring country club sports with overwhelmingly white participants) seemed dubious.

St. Thomas announced today they won't be taking their men's and women's tennis programs to Division I with them. Discontinued.
On the flip side, LIU announced the addition of men's tennis.

I would say Post if they are still going with the format of indoor sports at Brooklyn and outdoor sports at Post.

LIU also adding men's volleyball.
I think that's almost enough for the NEC to get an AQ on its own - LIU, SFC, SFU, Sacred Heart, FDU. Might as well add NJIT as an affiliate and break everyone away from the EIVA (where you'll never get past a big school like Penn State into the NCAAs).

Stanford will not, it turns out, cut 11 sports.
https://www.stanforddaily.com/2021/05/18...ty-sports/
Reprieves for M/W fencing, field hockey, lightweight rowing, M rowing, co-ed and W sailing, squash, synchronized swimming, M volleyball, and wrestling.
As an America East fan, I'll be interested to see if FH comes back to AE. With Monmouth, AE has six eastern based FH teams. Cal, Stanford, and UC Davis are superfluous at this point, particularly because Stanford keeps taking the AQ.

Money talks. Supporters of the 11 cut sports raised $40 million to be spent on those sports.

Stanford is one of the very few schools where alumni in Olympic sports are so successful in business they can cut checks like that. Other schools you see them on rent-a-car commercials about the ex-athletes they hire as lot employees.
I saw a former cabinet official saying that US University Presidents begged him (at the behest of their PRC friends) not to hurt US-China relations as 316,000 Chinese students who pay full fare, as they account for 40% of their operating budget.
This notion that there are great swaths of untapped wealthy American families are ready to throw Janey and Johnny into some public school and pay full fare so they can play an Olympic Sport is greatly exaggerated. Sure one or two schools might pull it off, but not twenty or thirty or a hundred. If they would, then these schools never would have sold out for Chinese Communists and Middle East Oil money.

Yeah, a large number of "State Universities" aren't like the State Universities of the 50's and 60's with substantial state government subsidy for in-state students as an economic development policy ... today a lot of them are more like "More or Less Private Universities operating in Publicly Owned Buildings".

RMU cuts its men’s and women’s hockey programs

Moon Township, Pa. – Robert Morris University announced today it will no longer field NCAA Division I men's and women's ice hockey teams as part of a series of strategic initiatives intended to position the university to be amongst the most agile and professionally focused schools in the nation as it prepares for its upcoming 100th anniversary.
