Yep, South Carolina brought in over $15 million more.

Average: $27,090,790

For whatever reason, Maine is listed as a member of the A10 (they were members in the A10 for football until 2006), but I did not include them. UMass, as noted, is an FBS Independent; if you remove their football revenues only, their total revenues come out to $29,652,612. That would slightly lower their conference average to $26,351,680.

That has actually been the case for at least the last three years (as far back as my nerdy spreadsheet goes!). Illinois was running alongside Northwestern, Purdue, and Maryland in 2016-17 and 2017-18. For some reason, the other three shot up in 2018-19, but Illinois stayed stagnant. You guys are on a similar revenue trajectory with Arizona and Syracuse.

RE: NCAA FBS Division Athletic Department Revenues
I ran some numbers. Basically if OU and Texas went to the B1G or SEC they would slightly raise the average value per school. If OU and KU went to either the SEC or B1G the average value per school would remain essentially the same (but obviously a little more reach for the brands).

B1G ave = $132,419,763
B1G ave with OU + KU = $133,308,176
B1G ave with OU + Texas = $139,311,995

SEC ave = $135,212,294
SEC ave with OU + KU = $135,751,641
SEC ave with OU + Texas = $141,755,459

An interesting difference is the mean

B1G mean = $124,513,005
B1G mean with OU + Texas = $128,335,813

SEC mean = $141,888,570
SEC mean with OU + Texas = $143,554,739

Note: for both SEC and B1G, KU + OU has no impact on mean as OU is above and KU below

For the other conferences:
XII ave = $116,300,857
ACC ave = $110,214,089
P12 ave = $104,969,812

If ND is counted in the ACC the average jumps to $114,169,658

But the means say something different, as the P12 have no top while UT and OU skew the Big XII
ACC mean = $102,611,778
P12 mean = $102,056,140
XII mean = $101,169,572

If ND is counted in the ACC the mean jumps to $105,407,867

I also have a "Mendoza Line" where things fall off, and it's higher in the P12 (about $90m) than the ACC or XII (about $85m)

Note the B12 would drop dramatically if you replace UT and OU with the two highest value G5 schools (BYU and UCF). The average value drops 25.21% to $92,887,581 and the mean drops 11.8% to $90,493,386. Going to 12 (Houston and say CSU or Cincy) the average drops down to $87,000,000 or over 32%. If KU also leaves the average value drops another 4-5%. I suspect these calculations are actually high for B12 valuation, as losing OU and Texas would lower the revenue of all the little-8 schools at least another 10% and maybe 20%. The value of the conference could well fall to an average below $75m, whcih is basically out of touch with the other power conferences.

*************

See the A10 numbers. Fordham is bloated by NYC. It says Dayton is the only one who could improve the Big East, but at a cost of full double round robin.

Not a Boise fan I think their kinda toxic .
They do have good fan support and good sized facilities and receive more TV money than their conference mates. Yet with all their advantages their below the MWC average that seems odd.

U Conn is first in the AAC yet going broke poor management obviously .
The award for doing more with less ULM their competitive.
Their facilities or athletic program is not the worst but by far the poorest.

If you place Colorado St in the Big 12 their mid eighties in revenue.

The 11 schools who made the Big 12 cut are 64, 67-70, 72, 74, 76, 86, 94 and unknown (Air Force). The top G5 schools not to make the cut are 71 Temple, 73 Memphis and 75 San Diego St.

Costs aren't included. If two western teams are added to the Big Ten, the travel costs for Nebraska wouldn't rise that much but for teams like Penn State and Ohio State they would rise significantly depending on how the Big Ten schedules. Assuming geographical divisions in football, the Big 12 teams would be placed in the West and Purdue would move to the East and PSU/OSU wouldn't be playing them that often. In many other Big Ten sports though there are no geographical divisions. Could they put in geographical measures to minimize travel from Penn State to Oklahoma in Olympic sports or even basketball (especially in sports where not every Big Ten school plays and you almost have to have every member play everybody every year)? If revenue slightly increases but so does travel cost, it becomes a net neutral or possibly a net loss if you're Penn State to add Oklahoma/Kansas. If it's Oklahoma/Texas, you most likely come out ahead. The same argument for the SEC. Missouri wouldn't mind geographically if Kansas came in but Florida would say over our dead body (and ask Florida basketball players if they want to go to Kansas in the middle of winter). Hopefully the power core of the Big Ten is in the East (OSU, Mich, PSU) and they will make decisions for their best interests and not the West's (Iowa, Neb). I'm not sure about the SEC.

It bears repeating that this figure is not "revenues". It is a combination of any inflows to the budget (tickets, TV money, donations, and subsidies) that balances the budget. In that sense "expenses" is the better title.

Gross Total Revenue is the only measuring stick not contaminated by creative bookkeeping. All other arguments based on just gate, just media revenue, just expenses, are apples to wheat, not even fruit to fruit.

And to Quo and others interested in F.S.U.'s large numbers it was donations, and they usually are in a range of revenue from ~135 million to ~150 million depending upon how the team is doing.

RE: NCAA FBS Division Athletic Department Revenues
Since we are talking about revenue, I guess we have to start talking about losses.

I got an e-mail from the Bubba Cunningham this week.
Carolina is looking at a potential $52 million loss of revenue (as things stand today limited seating for football and basketball, but with the seasons being played).
All of Carolina's season football tickets (my 9 included) have been cancelled. We have three options 1-full refund, 2-roll over seat $$ to next season (the problem: we reseat our stadium every three years based on accumulated contributions, we are due to reseat next year....no guarantee to get the same seats if you roll over) 3- donate the money to the University and take a tax deduction (problem: tax laws have changed, you have to make lots of contributions in order to qualify to take any).
Football tickets will be sold on a per game basis with priority given to season ticket holders. Seating limits have yet to be established.

The bigger they are the harder they fall.
Penn State announced no fans at their football games.
Any school with large seating capacity will experience greater losses in revenue than those that attract fewer fans.
The impact at Michigan, Alabama and Texas is going to be much greater that Northwestern, Vanderbilt and Iowa State.
Overhead is hard and painful to shed.......the more you have the harder it is to re-build even after the money starts to flow again.

Athletic Directors are going to have to earn their keep. I would imagine that the salary concessions made by coaches and support personnel (AND on the academic side, professors and staff) will never again be elevated back to their current levels.

RE: NCAA FBS Division Athletic Department Revenues
I entered the Equity in America revenues for each P5 team for the past 4 years in a spreadsheet to understand how revenues are changing over time. Note, for this analysis I classified ND as an ACC member.

Average team revenue per conference (2015/16, 2016/17, 2017/18 and 2018/19):

ACC $90.1 $95.5 $104.8 $114.2
B12 $102.0 $107.9 $119.0 $116.3
BIG $108.3 $115.0 $127.6 $132.4
PAC $89.1 $98.0 $105.0 $106.5
SEC $121.2 $128.0 $133.5 $134.5
All P5 $102.4 $109.1 $118.1 $121.4

Some of the growth in revenues results from the timing of the Orange vs Rose/Sugar Bowl rotation in the CFP. Nevertheless, the four year growth in the conference average revenue, as well as the change in standard deviation:

ACC 27% (69%)
B12 14% (19%)
BIG 22% (19%)
PAC 19% (37%)
SEC 11% (24%)
All P5 19% (23%)

During this four year stretch, ACC schools’ revenues grew the fastest (27%) of all P5 conferences. Interestingly, the growth rate in revenues varied greatly: FSU (61% 4 year growth), Miami (48%) and Louisville (33%) had the highest growth rates; while VT (0%) and UVA (8%) had the lowest growth in revenue. In 2016, the ACC schools’ range of revenue was very homogeneous...more so than most other P5 conferences. By 2019, the distribution of revenues amongst schools in the ACC is heterogeneous...not as unequal as the B12 schools, but trending in that direction.

Football is ~80 of that revenue. The 3 schools you cite are all from the Deep South except Louisville which like Kentucky emphasizes both football and basketball and both are top 25 revenue generators.

Drop the conference notion and look at it regionally and the differences will be more stark. Forbes was the last publication to speak of the SEC's new media deal and they did so in late June. Forbes cited sources that indicate that what ESPN will be paying for the SEC T1 contract will be between 375 million and 400 million. So the SEC's media payouts should be jumping sometime after this year from 45.7 million per school to between 68 million to 72 million per school depending upon the final details. What I heard early with regards to the contract was 67 million so this is right in line.

My point is this. In the Northern Midwest it is a school by school increase. In the Southeast through parts of the Southwest it is regional. There's your last bastion of college football religion. This region impacts Texas, Oklahoma, most of the SEC, and part of the ACC. In fact I would lump Ohio / Kentucky into a mini region and say that beyond that most of the growth is from South Carolina through Tennessee and South with South Carolina and Tennessee essentially on the fringe both for the region and for the growth.

That said, we are financially and culturally facing a large paradigm shift with the assault of this virus and the public's response to it. Therefore, nothing is certain moving forward.
