RE: Texas vs Rice -- September 27, 1997
As a long suffering Owl fan, I still recall two other instances where “we wuz robbed” playing Texas:
1) the 1989 game in Austin featuring the phantom (imo) touchdown by Peter Gardere in the 4th quarter when he seemed clearly to have been stopped at the one yard line, but was awarded the score by extending the ball and breaking the plane of the goal line, and
2) the SWC basketball tourney semi-final game when Rice had the lead, the ball, and referee Lynn Shortnacy whistled an open court foul on our guard Adam Peaked who was dribbling toward a victory in the final seconds.
Any others recall these events differently?

I’ve probably told this story before, but at the ‘89 game, afterwards I was shuffling out, feeling disgusted, and beneath the East grandstand I ran into Tom Phillips. At that time Tom was serving as chief justice of the Texas State Supreme Court. He was a pretty big Rice fan, although an Ivy Leaguer and Baylor law grad himself, but his wife was a Rice staffer. I sat couple of rows away from him at basketball games, season tickets, and was casually conversant with him from talking at the games and running into each other in the neighborhood. Seeing him, I blurted out, “Tom, did you see it?“ He came right back, wide-eyed and agitated. “I sure did see it,“ he said. “I was sitting right on the goal line. He was out of bounds by a yard and a half.“

Left me musing that the Evil Empire has such power and control that it even trumps the judgment of our Supreme Court Chief Justice. Such is life, I reminded myself. Get used to it.

PS If I remember right, wasn’t it a two point play? I think we were ahead 30 to 23 with seconds left in the game. Texas scored and went for two. As I recall it was on the two point play that Gardere kept, ran wide and was met by several Rice tacklers before he reached the pylon. So they won 31-30. Isn’t that how it was?

It was Tommy McGhee. He was dribbling along the sideline and being fouled all the way. Suddenly they called a foul on him and took a victory away from us.

I remember the play vividly...it was fourth and goal from about the eight or nine. Gardere was attempting to pass but scrambled and OJ drove him out between the one and two.

I was in the radio booth next to Darrell Royal's suite...when the play happened he struck the counter and then was surprised when it was called a touchdown. There was no way Gardere made it into the endzone.

Ok so it seems I remembered it wrong but Mr. Chief Justice had it right...he was out of bounds at the 1 1/2 yard line

I told my teasip friend that for Gardere to reach the ball over the goal line, he would have had to have 72 inch arms. he didn't care.

I was in the student section for the '89 game. That play and the Savery called strike 3 in Omaha still make me feel nauseous.

Ditto!! Here's a screenshot of Savery's called "strike", which was completely into the other batter's box:

My dad used to say that when you play texas in FB, they have 12 on their side, baseball 10 and bskb 6.

Bskb-the clown game in 78 and the 10 point play
FB-89-discussed above, 92-On the Fred Goldsmith show (remember Saturday morning coaches shows), he showed a replay where we recovered the end of the game onside kick with time left to score-refs missed that one 97-discussed above, 99-I talked to Matt Musil who was our announcer a couple of years after that 5 point loss there. Asked him about how bad the refs were, he just shook his head.

I think we were actually down 1 and going for the victory at the end.

In the post-game press conference, Peakes was magnificent. He said, "This is my last game, there's nothing anybody can suspend me for, so let me tell you just what a f-ing piece of s*** Shortnacy is." It didn't get prettier from there.

No we were up...that is why UT player was so aggressive and basically trying to foul.

I was at both the 89 UT football game and that SWC Tourney game.

The final score was 78-75. I thought we were down one, they hit 2 free throws, and we missed a 3 to end it. I was working the scorer's table. But memories are fallible and I can't find a play-by-play online.

But Peakes at the postgame was truly memorable.

You were right, we were up when that call happened. I was confusing it with the later traveling call on JJ Polk when we were down one after Texas scored, with effectively ended the game.

But my more vivid memory of that game is Adam Peakes's epic postgame interview. It went something like, "That was my last game, and they can't suspend me from grad school, so I'm going to tell you exactly what I think about that SOB Lynn Shortnacy. He screwed us tonight and this is not the first time. It's hard to win when you are playing five against eight. I'm just glad that I'm graduating so that SOB will never get the dance to screw me again." That was the gist of it, with a few profanity-laced interludes.
