Massive story - can't believe there isn't more reaction here yet. I wonder if this will last all spring? If it does, I hope the NCAA allows students to get an extra year of eligibility if they want it.

Tough call. It looks all NCAA sports (and all pro sports) are being suspended. If you extend eligibility for all current athletes, do you expand team size and scholarship numbers or do you transfer the hardship to incoming students?

Matt Bragga is a happy, happy man today (I kid... But this was going to be a spring to forget for the team we care about the most).

I think the dominoes are falling so quickly right now, everyone is too stunned to absorb it all. It is a massive story, but its hard for our brains to process all the ramifications. Too bad they couldn't suspend things before the Rice men's poor performance during yesterday's elimination game.

NCAA cancels all remaining championships for the academic year, including basketball.

First time since 1953-54, if my cursory glance was correct.

Football Owls were 9-2, and the champions of a memorable Cotton Bowl

Baseball Owls went 5-19 the following spring, a win total that has not been met or subceeded until this big asterisk of a year (though worth noting ther pct of .208 kept them above the ignominious "Mendoza Line" that no Rice team had fallen below since 1944.

Also, a sad note realized while taking this look: If the season goes down as official with a 2-14 (.125) record, it will match 1922's 2-5 squad for fewest wins and break the record of the 1943's .133 program low win pct.

But on the positive side, 14 losses is the 2nd fewest in school history (behind 2003's NC 58-12 record) since baseball went to the longer seasons? I'm not looking it up before I post so I guess there could have been another CWS team with around that many losses for the season?

I wonder what Rice will do about ticket holders? That’s gotta hurt what little revenue they have.

Not athletics’ to touch, but a little seed money to show the University was serious about D1 athletics wouldn’t hurt.

Can’t imagine spring football is far behind - a shame, since we clearly need the practice.

The only saving grace is that we’ve completed 9/15 spring practices which is quite a bit better than most schools.

If you want serious money for Rice athletics, build a time machine and go back and get T Boone to go to Rice.

Is there a chance baseball can come back in March? If not, can games be still played but not counted?

The athletics department has already ruled out March and is refunding all single-game tickets from this weekend to the end of the month. There's no conference or NCAA rule saying that they cannot play countable out-of-conference games right now, but there's no appetite or much reason to do so. Conference play is only suspended, so it may start in April. All remaining NCAA championships for the academic year are outright canceled, so the most resolution the season could get is an abbreviated conference championship. Whether Rice or the conference resumes in April will be decided later. I highly doubt the team would be able to do so if many players live on campus since the school is evicting most students by the end of next week, but possible varsity participation could be a granted exception.
