Not sure why’d you’d commit to a team that has shown no commitment to play.

I know another WR about that size that worked out pretty well. He wasn't fast though

But he could hold for long field goals.

Seems like a long shot but depends if he is a hard worker.

Any relation to Charlie Taaffe, former head coach at The Citadel and assistant coach/offensive coordinator at several schools, including Pitt, U Va, Army.

That'd make at least 3 DB's from Austin on roster...

RE: Rice football recruiting - class of 2021
A couple of recent commits -- Connor Welsh, TE, 6-3 1/2, 232, North Richland Hills (Birdville) and
Jalen Hargrove, DL, 6-3, 305, Wallingford, CT (Choate Rosemary Hall). I'll assume both are scholarship kids but we're getting to the point now where we'll start to hear about PWO's as well. Hargrove hails from a pretty elite and historically successful prep program in the northeast, but that boarding school has yet to play any competition in any sports this year. We're his first offer but I imagine recruiting sleepers might be one of the ultimate silver linings in this Covid age of prep sports.

Will the Rice administration ever allow the Owls to be excellent in athletics again like they once were under Jess Neely?

Welsh has offers from Carnegie Mellon, Harvard and Davidson, so I'm thinking he's a PWO?

Jonathan Jean, DB from Florida, has committed. According to 24/7, he was committed to Robert Morris and flipped to Rice.

RE: Rice football recruiting - class of 2021
Rice should give a tremendous RB/DB , Jonathan Brooks, of Hallettsville a call. He has a scholarship from Texas and not sure what other schools. He has run for over 2500 yds and Hallettsville is in the semifinals in 3A Div 1. Since Herman future is doubtful at Texas, and Hallettsville is a relatively small school, he might be interested in Rice.

Looks like we might have just gotten a commitment from Cal Varner out of Katy HS (6-5, 230 DE). I'll wait to make sure before adding him to the initial post/list.

Speaking of Katy football, I thought it was interesting that Elkins had a bunch of Covid cases so they had to forfeit their playoff game against Katy.
