Yea it sounded a lot more juicy before MMM slid that little piece of factual info in there.

At the very least it's a very cogent move for Howard to move a bunch of associate sports to a conference that will have better travel than their old conferences.

1) They'd lose their Celebration Bowl spot, which entails ABC coverage and a $1 million payout. But more importantly ...
2. If they dropped football, they'd no longer qualify as a Division 1 conference. A D1 conference needs to sponsor men's basketball and either football or two other team sports. Remove football from the equation and the only team sport they offer is baseball, and even that's going to be tenuous after next season as they go from nine teams to six. And there's no obvious path to a second sport. Howard is the only school with men's soccer. There's no men's volleyball or lacrosse programs (Hampton has lacrosse but is now in the Big South).
Dropping football wouldn't save the MEAC, it'd literally kill it.

Plus Howard was in the Sun Belt for men's soccer, and with Appalachian State dropping its program, the Belt was down to five teams (two of them affiliates), so the writing was on the wall for soccer as a conference sport.

as a little added nugget, the Patriot League (John Feinstein and I argue about this) could have been the choice, that league sponsors those same sports, but Howard chose the NEC.

The NEC should fire whoever writes their tweets. That is some pretty embarrassing grammar.

its not their fault, its mine, when I copied and pasted their tweet, they had used emojis for all the sports; I didn't check the grammar very carefully when the computer replaced the emojis with words

Wow...when did the CAA need a split to become an "east-coast-ish conference"? Or is this referencing a desired move of some members to form a FBS conference?

That line is referencing CUSA.

Ugh. Don't give me hope!
Seriously. Im just glad to know some people in and outside of ODU are aware that CUSA cant be sustained in the long run. Thats a great article. I feel like almost every word could be about CUSA as well. Though the culture of most of the schools is a little more similar than the CAA. In some ways, as ODU seems to embrace more northern sensibilities we may actually be the outlier that doesnt fit in CUSA. Especially considering our geographic location on the Atlantic coast.

Ah re-read that and CUSA was as clear as day. My bad.

Matt is on top of this stuff. Pretty good chops and he's related to The Intercollegiate, which was the key faction that broke the Texas Tech situation in conjunction with USA Today.
He's a worthy follow on Twitter as is his newsletter, if you're into that kind of thing.

RE: Death of MEAC starts another round of dominos?
The WAC has made their move
they will add FCS Football with Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston State, SF Austin, Tarleton State, Southern Utah and Dixie State. This will make another mountain/central time zone conference (TV friendly).
4 are from the Southland Conference, two are move ups from D2 (Dixie St and Tarleton St) and 1 from the Big Sky (Southern Utah)
7 is a bad number for football; I'm thinking NMSU drops down to 1AA, maybe Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona move with Southern Utah. Does New Mexico drop down in FB only to join too?
The Southland would be done to 6 FB teams (NW State; Central Ark; Nicholls St.; McNeese St.; Houston Baptist; and Incarnate Word) meaning that conference needs 2 teams.
So does the MEAC (NC Central; Norfolk St.; SC State; Howard; Morgan St.; Del St.)
I can't see either conference adding D2 teams (the Winston Salem St disaster) so either they steal from the SWAC, Ohio Valley or they fold.
This bears watching.

RE: Death of MEAC starts another round of dominos?
There were a number of rumors early last month that Central Arkansas was headed to the Atlantic Sun with some members of the OVC. Haven't seen anything official from my realignment buddies on that. That would really leave the Southland in a pickle.

Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston State, and Stephen F. Austin are "petitioning the WAC Board of Directors for entry into the conference beginning on July 1, 2021."
