I believe Doris Miller was killed near the Gilbert Islands when his ship-an escort carrier-was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. Subsequent secondary detonations from the aircraft ordinance killed 3/4 of the crew, including Miller. 600 men KIA in that one attack. People living today don't recognize how costly WW2 was to the United States.

RIP, Seaman Miller.
