This is an interesting one...I watched all his clips...I mean he can kind of throw. I don’t know that I wouldn’t give him a shot at QB. He can certainly move, so a position change to see PT is not out of the question, but he can kind of throw.
Might be worth it to work on his wind up and release for a few seasons.
Elgin HS not a football powerhouse. Couple that with screwed up season in Illinois maybe we found a diamond in rough athlete
Interesting looking player. He's got some pocket awareness to him. Funny throwing motion. Worse case scenario, we got Britt Davis.
I don't suppose he's related to Neil Lomax? Anyway he has good size. If he ended up as a Britt Davis player we could do way worse.

And honestly for kids exactly like this it’s not season that mattered as much as the missed camps. That’s where under the radar guys had a chance to show up and get noticed.

Boom or Bust on this one. If he's a football player he is a STAR, only time will tell with him. GREAT first step, needs to work hands better and play more physical. Very likely just has to be coached up. We got a ATHLETE hope it turns out well for both him and the HUSKIES.

Quote:4. JaVaughn Byrd

Older article on Byrd.
https://amp.jsonline.com/amp/3301086001
Quote:Byrd, a senior safety and Northern Illinois recruit, intercepted six passes and finished fourth on the team in tackles.
Quote:Through the start of Byrd's sophomore year, the Generals used him at wide receiver, and for good reason. He’s a shifty athlete with blazing speed – he ran a 4.42 40-yard dash the summer before his junior year. Get the ball in his hands and good things can happen.
Going into a Week 5 game against Milwaukee Hamilton in 2018, however, King’s depth was depleted at defensive back. The coaching staff had noticed how well Byrd moved in space, so, faced with limited choices, started him at safety.
He never moved away from the position.
“Our starter was hurt, our backups were hurt, so we just threw him into a game without a ton of knowledge on that side of the ball,” Wozniak said. “He was out there making plays. That’s what immediately opened our eyes.”
Byrd found himself getting involved in nearly every play at safety and making a major impact on the game.
“I liked it,” Byrd said. “I made a couple of plays, a couple of tackles and said to myself, ‘I can do this.’ I just realized that with what I’m able to do best, I can help the team better on defense.”
Byrd quickly became a film junkie, watching clips of himself to hone in on where he could improve. Division I colleges started to notice him during his junior year, particularly in his coverage abilities, and four programs offered: Central Michigan, Northern Illinois, Northern Iowa and Michigan State.
“He’s super athletic,” Wozniak said. “He just has a nose for the ball. He’ll come back across the field to make a play and it leaves you amazed.”

2021 Official Verbal Thread
His tape is fantastic. He makes plays. I don't watch a lot of tape but he just stands out against his competitors. I'm excited to see what he'll do at NIU.

Poaching a Preferred Walk On from a Non P5 school does not seem like a path to a Big Ten title. Good luck to the kid though. I was hoping to get more Suburban kids to see if more students could get interested in NIU. This hurts form that perspective probably not much on the field.

One of the RB is going to transfer for sure now.
Looks like a bruiser in the form of a poor man's Erin Collins. That should compliment any of our smaller guys well next year.

One thing I love about this staff is their relentless pursuit for talent. It seems like they never settle with what they have on the roster. Let’s just hope this starts materializing into Ws soon.

I thought it was odd they keep going after good players, after signing good players the year prior. But looking at how active the transfer portal is, you really have to keep recruiting. No matter how well your program does.

I see this kid more as special teams and a good practice player.
That said - it’s always important to have good players due to injury and transfers. I just don’t see him on the level of Collins or Rat Dog. I think Collins has 2 years left so...who knows.

100%.
Think of the RB room at Wisconsin where Hammock coached. They had talent in spades and he wants to duplicate it here. Guys shouldn't be afraid of competition, they should embrace it. That way when adversity comes they will be prepared to succeed.
