A Power 5 AD in New York this week said a specific 8-team playoff model is circulating around the CFB world that would incorporate bowls, including a bowl-sponsored national championship game.

The model:
- 5 auto bids for P5 champs
- 2 at-large
- 1 Group of 5

That should put the end to the ND to the ACC talk(it won't, it should though).

I actually think if they were to adopt this format then it would FORCE Notre Dame to join the ACC. Otherwise, they are at a disadvantage each year. What's tougher for Notre Dame? Winning the ACC or finishing the regular season ranked in the T8? I would think finishing in the T8 would be harder.

I disagree, they have to be in top 4 now, top 8 is easier.

It’s not necessarily the top 8 though. Theoretically, the P5 champs could finish out of the top 8, and the G5 champ most likely will every season. Notre Dame would have to be top 2 to guarantee a bid.

To give the lawyerly answer, “It depends.”

A top 4 ND team today is 100% in the 4-team playoff.

You’re correct that ND would need to be in the top 2 to be 100% in the playoff in a 5-1-2 format. An ND team ranked 3 or 4 would be highly likely to make the 8-team playoff (probably 99%), but there’s some uncertainty there.

On the other hand, though, an ND team ranked 5 through 8 would have 0% chance of making the 4-team playoff, but has a good to high chance of making the 8-team playoff in a 5-1-2 format.

So, it’s not that it’s easier or harder for ND in all situations. It really depends on the particular circumstances in a given year.
