Memphis thread
Obviously, Memphis without James Wiseman is a different team than with him. However, they are still very good and a large step above our level. Wiseman did not play in their last game, so until we learn something different I will assume he will not play against us.

They are 3-1, but their wins have come against easy opponents. They lost to Oregon by 8.

Against Alcorn they started 6-9, 6-9, 6-5 on the front line. And they can bring 6-10, 6-9 off the bench.

They shoot exceptionally well overall (51.8%), but not very well from the arc (32.6%). However, their defensive numbers have been outstanding, allowing 35% and 29%. Of course, the talent disparity they have enjoyed vs. their opposition would have a lot to do with that. They are plus-11 on the boards.

In addition to Wiseman, they have four players averaging double figures.

On paper we don't belong in this one. I hope that is what they think.

RE: Memphis thread
If Lottie misses another free throw he’s got to get out of the game. 4 misses in a row is absurd

RE: Memphis thread
We are playing hard and competing but turnovers and pathetic free throw shooting has kept us from winning the half.

I’ve seen poor free throw shooting, but geez! How bad can a team be from the line? Incredible!

Man, they have a little foul trouble. But we can't hit FTs.

This team has a lot of grit, and length! For the second year in a row we came close at the FedEx Forum. I hope the game with Memphis can continue every year (5 years now?), and hopefully we can get one at The Jack. Might be doable with a 2 for one or something like that.

They average 91 ppg. We held them to 68. With Bankston or Nikola we win.

RE: Memphis thread
This team obviously is a very talented group, if we can get them all eligible and healthy. And one thing we have this year that we have not had at times in the past is a good stable of big men with some ability. In fact, I do not recall a better front line group as a whole during my tenure as a fan.

Turnovers are still a problem, with Nowell and with the team. Perimeter shooting is still a problem. But DW is showing more of a willingness to address issues this season, so I am hopeful.

Ifs and buts, candy and nuts,...What happens if they had Wiseman?

With him they win in a cakewalk. But they didn't have him because someone broke the rules.

Granted. But that “what if” speculation can go both ways.

Wiseman is an interesting case. When Hardaway gave his family the money, although he was a Memphis alum and booster, he was not the Memphis coach and I think he actually did it for the right reasons. But even though at the time it may have been a good deed, Memphis actually paid the price later. Haradway could have recruited this kid almost as easily from Nashville where he lived before.

The biggest mistake that was made here was taking the deal to a local court and then tumbling their nose at the NCAA by playing the kid. If they had not done that, they probably could have negotiated less games missed and been done with it a lot earlier.

And why shouldn't Niklla get less games?

I think sometimes the NBA stars who come directly to coaching in the NCAA without any experience at the college level don't have much regard for the system.
