05-ban

We defeated NC Wesleyan 105-81 in the first game of the 2017 season. NC Wesleyan is DIII. That's what last night reminded me of.
Probably a fair comparison. We really won't know what we look like until next week when we start playing some similar to conf competition

That was my exact thought waking up this morning. We expected a win last night. We got it. I expect us to get blown out on Friday. Anything different would be a surprise. Next week is where the rubber meets the road and we see what year three of McGrath will be like.

Campbell made 12 3s in their season opening 75-74 win at Coastal Carolina. Their coach thinks this is his best 3 point shooting team. We will find out Tuesday night if our defense has improved since last season or not.

FWIW after 1 game we are #189 in the nation in 3 point FG defense.

(Spoiler alert. After just 1 game I am going to comment on what I saw and let my cumulative basketball experience be my guide.)

With absolutely ZERO inside presence JWU scored 43% of their 83 points from the 3pt line, in our first game after finishing over #300 in 3pt defense and having said defense addressed in the pre-season practices. AND I clearly heard CB say once again, "They made some tough shots." We 'won' the rebounds 45-40. We had more turnovers than assists. HOWEVER, we are more fun to watch this year than last year's plodding offense. My standards for basketball have never been so low.

While the defense could have been better, they actually did hit some deep tough ones that I couldn’t believe. Long way to go....to get where we want to on d. Some play it better than others on the team. Need short leash for defenseive mistakes.

Even if that is true, someone of his staff would be wise to let Coach know that phrase has become something of a bad joke. Once virtually every team we play stops hitting "tough shots" every game we play, then maybe he might want to pull that back out and use it from time to time. Just not anymore right now.

The fact that a JWU can put up 80 on us tells me there's a long way to go re: defensive improvement. We will begin to see how far we have come starting next week.

I liked what I saw out of Boggs the other night. He has a nice looking shot & doesn't seem to be afraid to mix it up inside. Reminds me of a young Stuart Hare & that's meant as a compliment. Stuart turned into a good one (remember his dunk against southern cal?) And I think Boggs will also.

We won't be hearing it after the UNC game GM.

I'm afraid almost every shot we hit will be a tough one....

This is fair.
