Dixie State picks up a JC point guard. Cameron Gooden is 5'11, 170 and averaged 14.9 ppg and 3.1 apg at Kilgore JC

I watched one of Gillispie's Ranger JC games from 2018. His teams play a 3/4 court men-to-man defense. His team likes to hound the ball handler and over plays the passing lanes to his teammates. They also double team (and triple team) the ballhandler on dribble drives and high ball screens. Then quickly recover on the outlet pass to the open man. They use a lot of help defense; all with the intent of disrupting the offense and causing turnovers. In order to not get trapped, the offense must have good spacing. On offense, Gillispie swings the ball from side to side with his guards trying to find gaps in the defense; and with guards screening for each other above the arc. His Ranger team liked to drive hard to the basket.

I also watch some Dixie State games from this past season. Judkin's teams like to switch defenses on possessions; switching from a 2-3 zone, to a 1-3-1 zone, to a match zone, to a straight man-to-man at each change of possession. They also like early offense; pushing the ball to the rim or shooting the quick three. Finally, Dixie State uses a lot of motion in the half court; pick and rolls, weakside screens, and back screens usually feeding the ball to the big man rolling to the basket. One thing noticeable is Dixie State is not athletically on par with much of the WAC (mostly their big men), Judkin's team relies heavily on execution and shooting skill. They will struggle with quick athletic teams defensively. Athletically, Dixie State reminders me of the Stew Morrill coached Utah State teams of the past. Aggie fans will know what I mean.

On a different note, the Dixie State announcers will need to get a thicker skin. They seem to get quickly offended when opposing players show attitude or taunt their players on "in your face" plays. They would have been up in arms if a player like Trev Queen or Javon Levi played in their arena. Dixie State has a lot of choir boys on its team. This will be an interesting year in the WAC with the D1 dynamic for these two D2 schools; better athletes, better coaching, more player attitude, better refereeing. A lot of non-calls in D2. The game is called much tighter to the rules in D1.

I cannot stand our play by play guy... Casey Hogan did a great job, but whoever did the football broadcast he was extremely thin skinned and a huge homer... that and he has a near pre-pubescent voice.(Not Kyle Masters)

RE: WAC Commits 2020-21
NMSU has a really good play-by-play radio guy in Jack Nixon. He captures the essences of the game very well without being a homer. Also, NMSU has a good TV game announcer in Adam Young. We use to have a horrible one in Glen Cerny a few years back. I have never really liked our color commentators except for when it was Jeff Matthews. I cant stand Patrick Knapp's voice (aka Wolfman Jack) or Russ Bradburd (negativity). Bradburd looks at NMSU's performance through overly critical eye since he himself was an Aggie assistant coach about 20 years ago under Lou Henson. He was also a UTEP assistant under Don Haskins. Bradburd is very knowledgeable on the game of basketball and its history; also being a book writer. But his perception of the game is dated to a different era. But I digress. Many of you WAC fans (non-Aggies) have no knowledge of the people I speak. Overall, Nixon and Young are not homers; they give the other team credit when it is due. I am sure Nixon will give praise to Gillispie when his team plays the Aggies since Nixon has been the Aggie play-by-play guy since the late 1970's. And, around when Gillispie was the UTEP coach.

The football play-by-play guy for Tarleton last season was the absolute worst I've ever heard. That dude is in the wrong business. Please tell me he is not calling Basketball games. What happened to Hogan "the voice of the Texans"? I thought he came back.

Yes easy to see Tarleton is gonna need more size in this league..

I filtered out the rosters to show only players 6'8 or taller. Both Tarleton State and Dixie State will need more size (more skilled and athletic). However, the WAC hasn't been a post player dominant conference since Nevada, Boise State, Utah State, Louisiana Tech etc. etc. left the league. This is why NMSU has continued to dominant since then. NMSU typically has the best big men in the conference. the last four or five years, the WAC has been a guard dominated conference. However, to compete with NMSU for a title, someone else in the WAC needs to establish a strong low post game (both offensively AND defensively). Other than the Aggie big men, the best big man in the WAC not an Aggie in Alessandro Lever. However, up until the end of last season, he has been soft on defense. We will see if Drew can get more out of him defensively next season? This season's recruiting class has brought in the most big to the conference in a long time. We will see if one of these big men can emerge as a dominiant force.

RE: WAC Commits 2020-21
None of the big men on that list are gonna dominate. The most intriguing scorer of that whole bunch is Likayi. He is a scorer. We was killing at practice before he got injured. Guards are the key for mid majors to win games and upset people. Lots of big guys on that list with some pretty pathetic scoring numbers where they came from.

Cerney was awful. I agree that Knapps voice is like scratching your nails on a chalkboard. The worst homer idiots are the Bakersfield guys. They are the worst. So glad they are gone along with their whiny coach and disgusting basketball court. I didn't like anything about Bakersfield. The Utah Valley guys are always professional and objective and do not sound like homers. Young could probably be a little more enthusiastic but I appreciate both him and Nixon (radio for NMSU) never talk about the ref or "bad calls" like the idiot from GCU. The CBU guy is ok but it would be nice if he had a color commentary guy. Going back to Bradburd. He is awful. He is not in touch with the present rules of college basketball. It drives me crazy when he says things like, "it shouldn't be a intentional foul, he didn't mean it". First off, their is no such thing as an intentional foul, or when he says things like, "Casey Benson has a lot of guts to take that shot. He almost made it." What??? Crap like that. He sounds so stupid. My hate favorite was when McCants made the half court shot vs. GCU he says with a robotic android monotone voice, "the Aggies win it. They probably didnt deserve to win but they win it." What a freakin idiot.

One of the SB Nation blogs had a drinking game because of Cerny. I like to think his heart was in the right place. NMSU needed to move on, needed to become more professional than the Mac Boston era of half assness.

Bradburd just takes too much joy when NMSU loses. I truly believe he has a chip on his shoulder when Cerny was replaced with Young. He is such a big Weir homer on top of it. 2017-18 season was one of the best ever for NMSU athletics. That included Cerny's career coming to an end as play-by-play before the season started and Bradburd on sabbatical in Ireland for a year.

Nixon is a legend. I like AY a lot as do most, it would appear. I think there is a lot of debate regarding the others. I will say I love the Wolfman and watch women's games just to hear him. Different strokes...

Bako, GCU and UTRGVESPNXYZ are the worst. I've had to mute my TV because I could barely stand it.

I missed Bangai on my original post but added him into the roster list today when I was looking at the number of WAC big men. However, I am not Drew will keep him since he is quite raw. As for Tarleton State's roster? Yes, there are too many players listed. Which leads me to believe BCG will cut some of last season's players once he is done recruiting the players he wants. The fact that he has recruited so many guards indicates very few of Reisman's guards will return; maybe just Bethely and Range. And the only two big men worth keeping are Gaffney and maybe Burt Jr. if he is healthy and still has eligibility remaining. But this is an opinion of an outsider looking into the program. Maybe the Tarleton State fans can give a better assessment.

Maybe the Tarleton State fans can give a better assessment.

Gaffney's legit. And if everything I've heard about Billy Clyde is true he already loves the guy. Kind of raw with a high motor. Outhustles and outworks his man for everything he gets. I bet he will blossom nicely under BCG's wing. Gotta love the Kareem goggles, too. Don't know much about Burt.

Doesn’t Tarleton have way too many guys listed?

Did Bengel officially leave GCU?

Burt was a pretty good JUCO in the 2018 class when he signed with Purdue Fort Wayne. But it appears he had injury problems there and transferred to Tarleton State. He has yet to step foot in a D1 game since he left JC ball; two seasons ago. So, I am unsure how much eligibility he still has left? And if he is now healthy? As for Gaffney, I remember him being a 3-star prospect out of high school. So the potential is there to be a good D1 player. BCG runs a high motor team so if he has hustle, can play good defense, and rebound, I am sure Gillispie will want his to stick around on the team. If Reisman had players who paced themselves offensively and defensively, BCG will probably tell them to look elsewhere to play. I expect Tarleton State to be undersized and scrappy at first until BCG can load the roster with talent.

In case you missed it, Seattle picked up Washington State transfer Daron Henson, a 6'7, 210-lbs, Grad, forward.

For an update on GCU's roster, Lopes fans are having to piece things together without an official published roster. However, an interview with Drew was just published where he speaks in depth and for the first time as to what each member of the 2020 recruiting class listed above brings to the team. If I'm being optimistic, this leads me to believe that all of these guys are on-board for next season, including the former Majerle signees (except those we already know have been released from their NLIs). Drew also said that they have one open scholarship remaining for next season and are recruiting the globe to fill it.

Interestingly enough, there wasn't much discussion about the (possible) returnees. Again, Lopes fans get a glimmer of hope from this same interview when Drew states that one of the signees would come in as a backup to Jovan, but that's about as official as it gets. For what it's worth, the official team twitter account published a graphic on May 4th that had all the returnees and walk-ons listed above. This makes me at least slightly hopeful that almost everyone who hasn't already entered the portal will be back for 2020-21.

I think GCU will be a much better team under Drew. Drew is much more even keeled in his temperament. I feel Majerle ran off young players because of his impatience. I think Drew will better develop the players Majerle brought in. And, the ones Drew brought in late. The question is will Midtgaard be eligible right away? It sounds like Zdor will sit out this season and replace Lever the following season. My gut tells me McGlothan is going to be a major factor this season. He is the player Majerle was missing in the line up last season (a rebounder). It will be an interesting 2020-21 season (if COVID19 doesn't interrupt it). Although I think NMSU is still the team to beat, I think every WAC team has improved their situation from a season ago. Well, except for CBU who lost their whole starting 5 (if Acquaah doesn't return).

RE: WAC Commits 2020-21
My understanding was Midtgaard is coming in as a grad transfer, so should be eligible. I think you're correct about Dima, as it sounded like Drew was excited to get him bulked up in a redshirt season. Not that it should surprise anyone, but I also think you're on point about Gabe. It probably isn't fair to hold anyone to this standard, but he strikes me as a Grandy Glaze-type high energy leader and all around glue guy. The biggest difference is we may get to see Gabe n a GCU uniform for as many as 3 seasons instead of just the for Glaze.

Jack Nixon and Adam Young are the best play by play guys in the WAC. Everyone other schools play by play people are awful.
