RE: 2019-20 Men's and Women's Basketball Schedules
Rice WBB is a good experiment this year. Fresh off a top 25 season and a NCAA tournament appearance. Does it translate into more games with higher profile opponents?

Also my bold prediction, the men's basketball team will have the best season amongst football, basketball, and baseball. By best season, I mean the highest winning percentage, including postseason play.

RE: 2019-20 Men's and Women's Basketball Schedules
Well, looks like we'll get at least a couple power conference games for the women. Neutral site games against GT and VT just announced. GT was 17-13 with a 68 RPI last year. Virginia Tech 20-11 with a 73 RPI.

Quick notes: VT brought in two top-100 players plus another 4* and 3*. GT brought in a top-50 player plus a 4* and 3*. VT lost about 40 points per game including their leading scorer and a second-round draft pick. GT lost only about 17.5 points per game*. So looks like GT will be pretty solid next year (thinking top 50 RPI) and VT might be around the same range or a little lower.

*EDIT: And...I'm completely wrong. GT lost its two best freshmen who averaged a combined 25 or so points.

GT also fired their WBB coach amid allegations of abuse and she is now countersuing the university. Would be bad if we don't beat them.

These are perfect trap games in a CBB sense. Teams we should be expected to beat if we want to be a perennial NCAA tourney contender, even though they won't provide much of an RPI/resume boost, and games that will basically torpedo our at large chances if we don't win because of a lack of opportunities.

Makes sense, as we're playing A&M at home some time in November, i believe.

The women need to do the same thing the men need to do. Kick A, take names, destroy the conference, then go deep into the tournament, if you get a lousy seed, prove em wrong. Prior to 1998, had anybody heard of Boise St football or Gonzaga basketball? I was horrifically embarrased when we got clobbered by Boise in the early 2000's. Then in 2006, they were 13-0 and beat OU in the Orange Bowl.

If the basketball teams beat every home opponent by 40 (and do the above) even if the home opponents are the West Vermont technical Institute-burlington branch and similar, it won't matter.

The women basically did that last season. The games I went to watch were over by halftime.

they need to get to sweet 16 and more. Remember baseball went to CWS twice before they got more than a HS stadium and Jess had to finish #5 in the country before Rice Stadium was built, replacing Rice Field, built in 1913.

Good grief. The women have another 20 win season and go to a better post season tourney each year and you treat it as underachieving. The baseball team made it to the NCAA’s the first time in Wayne’s 4th season. This past year was Tina’s 4th. Wayne made it to Omaha and the top 8 in his 6th season...let’s see where Tina’s 6th team gets before complaining too much.

did not think it as underachieving. sweet 16 would be a real splash.

Disregarding the OOC games, about as good of a conference schedule as we could possibly get (which we knew about last year). WKU, MTSU, and UAB all at home. Apart from ODU, who are probably going to be very very good, the road games should be handleable.

Texas tussle in the Top-25

Mark your calendars, the Aggies travel to Houston to take on the Rice Owls on November 17th

Quote:Texas A&M and Rice have agreed to a November 17 game during the 2019-20 season at Rice's Tudor Fieldhouse in Houston. Both the Aggies and Owls finished last season ranked in the final AP Top 25 poll, with A&M checking in at No. 14 and Rice at No. 21.

"We're excited about playing another quality program that has developed into a consistent NCAA contender," said Texas A&M head coach Gary Blair. "We were prepared to play Rice in the NCAA Tournament last year—knowing that they were going to give Marquette a game in the First Round. Both programs are quite familiar with one another."

"I think it's going to be a battle down at Tudor Fieldhouse, and the best way to win that battle is to have as many Aggies in the building as Rice fans," Blair added. "I'm happy to take my Houston-area players back home and play in front of the numerous Aggie fans from the area."

Likewise with the Houston game, I just don't see why we couldn't have scheduled our premier home game for a Saturday. For one, you're competing with the NFL. More importantly, everybody knows that Rice students get plastered on Fridays and Saturdays and recover/do all their school work on Sundays. I'm sure we'll still get a decent crowd, but again, I'm imagining a 7:00 primetime Saturday game against a ranked A&M which would've been a really cool experience.

You are ignoring one important point. Houston and aTm have a say in when we play Houston and aTm.

Sure, I realize there are intricacies to scheduling beyond just saying "I want to play Saturday." Maybe there were factors completely out of our control. Still sucks because I imagine we could've created big events, even by Rice standards, out of prime time Houston and A&M showdowns at Tudor.

On the other hand BOB may have the Texans out of the title chase by then.
