Rendon just hit a Grand Slam
Trying to catch the Braves Anthony just hit a slam to give Washington a 6-2 lead. He now has 23 homers and 80 RBI. He also got a curtain call.

Some nice ESPN graphics, as well-- 5th in the majors in OPS, and #1 among all MLB infielders.

He hit #26 today - that's a new career high for him. He's looking pretty good too to set career bests in BA, RBI, slugging, OPS, etc.

Pay the man!

Also Duffey got two wins yesterday for the Twins. They awarded him a win on Saturday for Friday's game where he struck out the only batter he faced, overruling an earlier decision. Then on Sat he got two batters out with the bases loaded in the 5th for the win. (BTW I saw both games in person..not pleasant temps. Not going to today's 3pm game!)

Ant with his 27th bomb this afternoon, and he's now up to 97 RBIs-- both career highs, with 6 weeks to go in the regular season. He's hitting .318/.397/.605.

When in baseball history was the last time a pitcher ‘received’ two wins in the same day?

Pretty rare feat I’d say. Especially for the modern era.

Here's a link to an interesting article about pitchers who started both games of a doubleheader, quite of few of whom got two wins in that single day: https://prestonjg.wordpress.com/2009/09/...r-leagues/

Among the highlights of that article:

The most recent was Wilbur Wood, who on May 28, 1973, pitched the final five innings and earned the win of a suspended extra-inning game and then -- after just a 15-minute gap, so he wouldn't cool-down -- pitched a 4-hit shutout in that Momorial Day's regularly scheduled game.

The last pitcher to win two 9-inning games in a single day was Emil "Dutch" Levsen, who on Aug. 28, 1926, threw two 4-hitters in games that lasted only 1:29 and 1:40, respectively.

"The year before Levsen’s feat, 1925, is the first year in which we don’t have record of a pitcher starting both games of a doubleheader since 1911, which in turn was the first such season since 1902."

It also includes this link to the Baseball Almanac list of the 45 times a pitcher earned two complete-game wins in the same day: https://www.baseball-almanac.com/feats/feats24.shtml

Baseball Almanac Wrote:Joe McGinnity has accomplished this more times than any other pitcher, AND he did it all three times during the same season and the same month. (ETA: August 1903)

On July 12, 1879, Pud Galvin became the first to accomplish this feat with an extra inning game and his combined twenty-one innings are the most ever during a doubleheader win.

RE: Rendon just hit a Grand Slam
Another big day for Rendon today - 4x5 with another HR and 2 RBI. More importantly, the Nats swept the Cubs in Chicago for just the second time ever.

AR is closing in on the NL lead now in batting (he's up to .329 after today) and RBI (he's at 104 now). I guess he's still considered to be 3rd at best in the NL MVP race behind Cody Bellinger and Christian Yelich, although I'd argue that he should be considered for 2nd behind Bellinger at this point. Atlanta also has a couple of players squarely in the mix in Freeman and Acuna.

Be nice if Houston would trade Correra for Rendon. Correra seems to be injury prone

Down 5-6 to lowly Miami in the bottom of the 9th, Ant walks it off with a 2-RBI single to give the Nats the win.

For the night: 3-4, BB, double (37), 3 RBIs (107).

Hitting .333/.412/.619 on the year.

RE: Rendon just hit a Grand Slam
I'm kind of surprised they pitched to Rendon (runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out) but Soto behind him in the lineup is having a solid season too. AR normally is having the type of month that would make him a front-runner for player of the month (he might be over .400 for the month of August now and I think is at 30 RBI for the month?). But Cincy has a rookie this month with 14 homers so he'll probably get player of the month.

Actually, .371/.423/.679, with 6 HRs and 24 RBIs.

He's batting .410/.466/.846 in high-leverage situations. His batting average his higher on the road, but his slugging percentage is better at home (more HRs). Some interesting splits on baseball-reference.

Rendon HR in his first at-bat tonight. MLB.com has him at .386 with 6 HR and 27 RBI for the month entering tonight's game. I wonder why they have a discrepency from baseball-reference? MLB has him 39 for 101 this month, so a big game tonight and he can go over .400 this month. He's also hitting .379 with more than an RBI a game since the All-Star break.

I think it's because baseball-reference probably hadn't included last night's game yet. That would seem to match things up on the RBI side.

He's just hit another HR, so he's 2 for 3 with 2 solo HRs in today's game, now in the 8th inning. He's also been hit by a pitch. 41 for 104 isn't quite enough - .3942.

.335 AVG is now leading the NL, and I believe his 2 RBIs so far tonight puts him in a tie with Freeman for the NL lead with 109. So long as the Nats finish strong-- and they have the best record in baseball since the all-star break-- Ant should finish in the Top 3 in MVP voting.

Another homer today (2-run shot). I'd say he's clearly ahead of Yelich and should be grabbing Bellinger's attention too. He might be leading the majors in two of the three Triple Crown categories after today.

??? To each their own, but I have Yelich against of Bellinger. Yes, Bellinger and Alonso are clearly ahead in HRs, but he's hitting "only" .307, and despite his HRs, is well behind in RBIs. And Ant blows them both away in defensive WAR.

MVP stands for Most Valuable Player. Not best stats. Milwaukee is well behind both Los Angeles and now Washington in the standings. Plus Yelich won it last year with stats that are likely to be worse than Rendon (unless Rendon has a bad September). People were writing off Washington after they lost Harper to the Phillies.

As of today - 1 Bellinger 2 Rendon 3 Yelich

Why Bellinger over Rendon? Ant is leading him in all but a couple offensive stats, and is a much more valuable defender.
