RE: Competition is bringing the best out of Childers
Novak did more with less than any NIU coach, and probably any D-1 coach in the last 30 years. Today we are still reaping the benefits.

Coaches around the country revere Novak. That says a lot...

I think the headline of "already scaring opponents" is a bit overdone; more like MAC coaches already respect Hammock and what he will do with the team!

I think it all comes back to what Coach Hammock said that he is going to ALLOW players to USE their talent. That is why a QB competition not possible under Carey, QB skillsets and talents were not needed or even demanded to run the offense. Impossible to rate performance when you demand no skill sets in the performance.

I agree that a lot of what we saw from the QB position post Jordan Lynch was CArey not allowing a player to take risks--- which makes it tough to play QB.

Novak? No way is he one of the best in college football history.

Probably not in game reasoning or any X and O reason why he has to be considered one of the best, but I find it hard to believe more than a handful of coaches in the past 40 years could have turned NIU football from the absolute worst program in the nation to a year in and year out top 25 contender. The culture Novak inherited just was one of the worst one could imagine. His patience, perseverance, and denial of the shortcut was the only remedy and I just dont feel like many could have pulled that off.

This topic was once about the QB competition. The Novak debate needs it’s own thread. Thanks!

Based on early returns seems like Bowers will start. Always need 2-3 QBs that can play.

Klake-can you provide a bit more info on why you state this? I’m hopeful in seeing improvement either with Childers or having Bowers step into the role

In the one article sounded like he was throwing deep ball well. This is important as it spreads the field.

Random thought, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the true starting quarterback wasn’t named till the 2nd game. Maybe Hammock will wait it out and sees who plays the best against ISU. Childers gets the first half. Bowers gets the 2nd half. Winner takes all?! Or Bowers first half , Childers gets the second. As long as it doesn’t cost us the game.

From another thread:

(08-10-2019 05:40 PM)NorthCoast Wrote:  NIU Football: Familiar feeling for Bowers in QB battle with Childers, Thompson

Quote:During practice, Bowers has showcased a steady pocket presence and a strength of throwing the ball down the middle of the field and between the hashes and on deep routes toward the sidelines.

Offensive coordinator Eric Eidsness said he has liked what he's seen from Bowers mentally.

He’s picked stuff up a lot faster than they have, but he’s still learning every day," Eidsness said. "You learn in the summer, but when you start facing a real defense, not just 7 on 7, it’s different. You’ve got to handle protection checks, things like that. He’s played a lot of football. He knows how to play the game."

Happy times.

I really hope they can avoid that. One of the great benefits of seeing previous coach leave is that he was not able to make these decisions in the preseason and it hurt the overall progression of the team. I do think Bowers and Childers both start 3 or more games this year though through some possible growing pains and unforeseen circumstances
