Fighting for Fans with Cheap Food and Drink

“We’re competing more than ever before against the television product we helped create,” Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby told Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports in March. “There’s no line at the restroom. The beer is always cold [at home]. You don’t have to invest eight hours going to the stadium. There’s no parking fees. You don’t have to pay seat license, and on your 70-inch TV it’s a pretty good viewing experience.”

To further stem the tide, the school announced Thursday that it was following the lead of other sports teams, most notably the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, in slashing prices on the food and drink served at the stadium. And when you look at the breakdown of the prices, which the school has split into two categories, the word “slashing” might actually be an understatement because it really doesn’t get much cheaper than $1 hot dogs and $2 beers.

For anyone who hasn't clicked through: The school that is selling $1 hot dogs and $2 beers at football games is Louisiana-Lafayette.

Quote:As Football Scoop’s Zach Barnett points out, you now can get three hot dogs, three 16-ounce beers and a popcorn for $10 at a Louisiana Lafayette football game, which is probably cheaper than buying three hot dogs, three 16-ounce beers and a popcorn at the grocery store.

Makes sense that schools would finally get around to doing this. Costco sells a hot dog and soda together for $1.50; football teams can do the same and not lose money. It's a good way to attract people who are on the fence between going to the stadium and watching at home.

The only thing you have to watch out for is training concession stand workers to limit any one person's number of beers. Back in the day when the SF Giants played at Candlestick Park and they had cheap beers, there were many fights in the bleachers involving guys who had several beers.

Can't remember last time when you could get a beer for $2.00 at venue like that. Early 90's at Nippert? Maybe late 80's at Reds games at Riverfront? Heck of a deal.

Going to the stadium and campus has to be an experience beyond just watching a game because you can do that for a lot cheaper and more comfort in your own home

The schools that have deep traditions and a rich game day experience beyond just the game itself will do fine, but the schools who are only offering “show up in a (school) color t-shirt and sit in the stadium watching this game” are going to have a harder fight against the hidef plasma in an air conditioned man cave with all your favorite food and drink

So are they going to be selling Yellowtail and Food Lion brand Brie at UNC games?
