It's safe to say one of the best. IMO, he is certainly the best all around player to come to Williamsburg and his nationally recognized stats back that up. He is a 2-time Abdul Jabbar finalist and has put up numbers on par with NCAA all-timers. But, it's hard for me to say it just yet when there was another tribe player in the house yesterday who is the all time scoring leader and the 1st & only (so far at least) CAA player of the year. He has gone on to be a highly successful pro and is a cornerstone for the upward trajectory of the program. Once Nate gets CAA POY, which I expect after this season, we can revisit this.

My point was that those things seem a lock. Top 3 all-time in 3 different major statistical categories. I guess the tourney performance this year might be the tiebreaker for those on the fence. If we make the final, Id say that he overtakes Marcus.

I would say that a deep CAAT run would equal Marcus for importance and overtake him on a strictly statistical basis. An NCAAT appearance would entitle Nate to a statue. I hesitate to compare Nate or Marcus to the greats of the past (like Giermak, Chambers, and Cohen) because the game was just so different back then. It still boggles my mind how many points those guys scored back before there was a three point shot -- in fact, turn all of Marcus' and Nate's treys into deuces and calculate how many points it would have been. Also, some of those early players played only 3 seasons. Cohen impresses me a ton because, like Nate, he excelled at both scoring and rebounding.

Actually, just to clarify, but Boston University (BU), Dayton, and Gonzaga are all mid-majors, too. Point well taken, though!

At some institutions eligibility is compulsory. At others it’s advisory. Who’s to say a school having successfully stretched the eligibility envelope in one direction for years wouldn’t be afraid to work the other end of the spectrum. It’s probably only a matter of time.

RE: Nate Knight
I think it will be really interesting to see if he gets drafted and where. He doesn't really play against anyone who is close to NBA caliber in our conference games so the tape doesn't tell you much. He's played very well against P6 teams the last two years which is a better gauge. What I know is that he can score around the basket with both hands. You don't see that very often in the NBA. I think he handles the ball well enough for a stretch four and for sure for a true center. I still don't think he stays focused on defense. That may be desire or just lack of foot speed.

Someone in the NBA is going to take a chance on him, and I won't be surprised if it is a pick in the top 20. The so called experts on line don't even look at small school players (they usually just copy each other), but the NBA talent scouts and GMs do. He's a very low risk in terms of downside, especially with no real injury history, he stays out of trouble, etc. He's only been playing real competitive hoops for five years.

Yes, great article, thanks for posting. Not complaining, just observing, but too bad that first photo had to be set in the gym of American University. Maybe a photo from the Oklahoma or Stanford games would have been more impressive to the detail-oriented observer.

Hard to believe we'll be seeing Nate play at Kaplan for the final time on February 29th. I would hope we'll draw
another big crowd and packed student section for this special final home game.

Hey folks, why not retire his #13 then?

He certainly deserves having his number retired. My guess is that his retirement is built into the new arena inaugural season festivities.

I'm pretty sure they retired Lowenhaupt's number in his last game. I think it would be fitting to send him out with all of his team mates, student friends, etc. in attendance. Plus this fan base knows him the best.

I believe that Cieplicki's jersey was retired in his last game also.

I'm all for it, just think that small chance that they retire 2 in the same season.

In reality, they retired Marcus' number when he left. It was said that the number would never be worn again, and it hasn't!!

Dont want to jinx the NCAA tourney to say its his last game at Kaplan and then have us somehow end up hosting an NIT game.

He's definitely on my Mt. Rushmore of Tribe Men's Basketball, but all of this discussion about Nate and Marcus got me thinking...and being thankful.

I was fortunate to have been a student when Keith Cieplicki AND Lynn Norenberg were earning their honors, so it's been a while since we've had anyone whose career was retire-your-number-worthy. How lucky are we to have witnessed the careers of both Marcus Thornton and Nathan Knight, practically back to back?

Let's pray Dane's recruiting game is strong enough to keep the good times rolling...but it may be a while before we see two players of this caliber in such a short span.

Watching Delaware's "Nate" torch us during the first half on Saturday reminded me a lot Keith Cieplicki. I still believe that Cieplicki would have led us to the NCAA tourney during his career if it were not for that pretty good player by the name of David Robinson. And yes, I am still trying to block the 1982-83 season from my memory.

For the 2nd straight year, Nate is one of the 5 finalists for the Kareem Abdul Jabbar award.
