Bowling Team
Just wondering where the bowling team practices.
I was thinking it was the Vestavia Bowl but things may have changed.
Wouldn't it be nice to have a facility on campus for them?
They have overachieved without improvements whereas it seems our softball team tanks with more & more facilities being given to them.
Do other universities have bowling facilities for their teams?

Wow. In a single post you've argued for and against facilities being upgraded. Impressive.

With that said, it is interesting that our athletic department has decided to field teams in synchronized swimming, beach volleyball, bowling, etc. & the like over the years.
Wouldn't it be better to decide what sports to add as a conference thereby guaranteeing that you would at least have conference mates competing in these sports?

Seems like competing in a women's sport that would actually draw some fans/interest, like gymnastics, would be better. Already have Bartow Arena on campus for meets.

the sports were chosen based on cost.
There are no d1 conferences that compete in bowling. There are several schools schools in the area that have bowling programs though. It's a relatively inexpensive program to run that meets title IX requirements in a cost effective way. Same goes for Beach Volleyball and Rifle.

RE: Bowling Team
In the case of the bowling team, the Athletic Dept. may have decided it is more economical to reserve times at local public venues than build on campus facilities. We will be doing the same kind of thing using the BJCC stadium rather than building our own. It is like the joke where a suburban housewife is asked "What are you making for supper?" She answers "Reservations".
On campus facilities require the costs of construction (perhaps on dedicated land) and then 24/7/365 maintenance, security, utilities, insurance, etc.

Yup. If we were going to add a sport that is actually played around here, it should be lacrosse. Very popular at the youth level in Bham area, boys and girls.
But we would need some kind of field so that's out.

Gymnastics is one of the most expensive women's sports you could choose. It also sets us up in competition with bammer, which generally means that the BOT screws with us.

It is fairly common to see Lacrosse lines on football &/or soccer fields on college TV games. Insurance for sports that involve collision of bodies becomes a major cost consideration. Athletic girls play contact sports just as hard as guys do. Many schools have programs in field hockey, lacrosse and other track & field sports. UAB did pretty well in synchronized swimming (Ohio State was usually #1) before the NCAA "pulled the plug" on its certification some years ago.

Soccer has quite a large number of concussions as a sport as well.
There are local league rules in place here to where headers aren't allowed under 12 years of age or so.

Actually there are four:
MEAC (UAB is a member for bowling) https://meacsports.com/standings.aspx?path=wbowl
North East Conference
Soutland
SWAC
None of which are d1 football conferences. Sorry, I was implying that based on the original post about there only being six FBS universities that also have D1 bowling teams, but should have explicitly said so in the second post.
Gotcha.

My daughter and I went bowling in Vestavia several weeks ago. There was a sign on the wall stating "Home of UAB Bowling Team". We were there for about an hour an one-half and barely finished one game. Our balls kept getting stuck in the return gutters. Once the ball jammed.in the ball return. We kept bowling and rolled 10 different balls until they were all stuck in the return. I think it was a fire hazard but we couldn't get help from the staff. One guy walked around with a long stick and told us 4 or 5 times he couldn't help..

Yep. Of course that place has been flooded a half dozen times over the last few years as well.
Was very surprised when they took over the Lightning Strikes alley in Trussville & turned it into a shiite hole.
That was actually a very nice play that had held PBA events.
