President Trump Rejects Proposal to Temporarily Reopen the Government

Quote:WASHINGTON — President Trump said on Monday that he has rejected a proposal by Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina to temporarily reopen the government in an effort to jump-start talks with Democratic lawmakers on funding a border wall.

“I did reject it,” Mr. Trump said of the proposal, speaking to reporters as he boarded Marine One outside of the White House, en route to delivering a speech to a farm convention in New Orleans.

In an appearance on Fox News Sunday, Mr. Graham, a close ally of the president, pitched Mr. Trump on a plan for the president to agree to a vote by Congress to reopen the government for about three weeks “before he pulls the plug on the legislative option.” If there was no progress made during that time, Mr. Graham said, the president could then declare a national emergency as a way to obtain funding for a border wall without congressional action.

But Mr. Trump said that he did not want to extend the impasse over funding for the wall. It was not clear, however, what Mr. Trump saw as an alternative. “I’m not looking to call a national emergency,” he said on Monday. “This is so simple you shouldn’t have to.”

Stop payment to Congress and their aids and they’ll quit BS-big and come to the table. I saw something yesterday stating that the Dems were partying on a beach yesterday. See they’re concerned about re-opening the government.

The Republicans should be panicking. Since new polls continue to show that a high majority of Americans blame Trump over the Democrats over the shutdown (and don't want a wall), Republicans know 2020 is looking bleaker and bleaker.

Further, the longer the shutdown, the likelier we will be facing zero economic growth and a recession.

Democrats don't want people to be out of jobs and not getting paid, but at the same time, they're not going to be held hostage by Trump. And I don't blame them. I'm on record saying I'd be okay with a wall if we got meaningful legislation in return that the majority of Americans want. But we can't let 35-40 percent of Americans deciding the future of this country.

Your president is correct.

Maybe the democrats should have been working over the weekend instead of partying down in Puerto Rico with lobbyists. I mean, if they had any EMPATHY to those affected by the shutdown, you would have thought they would have avoided those optics.

twenty five percent of the government being shutdown has nothing to do with the economy. That sounds like something a socialist would say. The complete opposite will happen. When those people do get paid they will get the largest check they have probably gotten in their lives and go out and spend with it.

Sorry I’m not going with CNN polls. I fully believe the DNC fed fake numbers to the media in 2016.

No offense to you or proof. Just a gut feeling.

I looked at it too, and then looked for the Demographics of the poll. Couldn't find them. His AR is still double what Congress' is which went down 10% since the Dems took power.

Well with delays from the sickouts at airports, it will start to have a negative economic effect.

The Dems just need to ask for what they want and make a deal. Trump has said what he wants. It would be silly to re-open just to kick this can down the road. They've had 15.5 months to negotiate this budget. Another 30 days doesn't get you any closer to resolution. Only pressure to act does.

One of the reasons for term limits. Current rules allow professional politicians who are overwhelmingly lawyers. Lawyers strategy is pushing everything to the last second to get the best possible deal. So nothing gets addressed until it is a crisis and sometimes not even then.

President Trump just released a video of a dozen or so dems basically saying that if you call the steel slats a fence instead of a wall, they're in.

THEY'RE CAVING

Voters may blame Trump slightly more now, but I imagine they'll blame both sides pretty evenly as this drags on. They think "you sided with illegals over federal workers."

The shut down news is better for him than the info coming out about the Mueller investigation.

On rent and food.... since the vast majority (like all of America) live either paycheck to paycheck or every other.
