RE: Carleton game televised?
The Ravens have won 13 of the last 16 Canadian university championships, and their record a year ago was 25-1. Their win Monday was just their latest against an NCAA Div. I opponent. They've beaten Wisconsin, TCU and Wichita State in recent years - and won at Providence last October.
The Bearcats conclude their visit to Canada on Tuesday when they battle the McGill Redmen - winners of six consecutive league championships - in Montreal at 7 p.m. Eastern.

Frankly, I thought that game was a tossup at best given all the factors. They handled us, but they are really good and no need to read much into it.

It's also August, though, so I'm not gonna get too worked up about it.
mick also said they would do no scouting. we're also trying to replace like 36 points per game. not saying that's possible, i mean, i would like it to be, but that sh!t don't come together in the middle of august

RE: Carleton game televised?
Interesting quote from Mick in the Cincinnati.com article. https://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/...921316002/
“Tonight we got beat by a veteran team that had tremendous offensive execution,” UC head coach Mick Cronin said. “The fact that we hadn’t worked on defense this summer really showed tonight. I’m still very disappointed with our veteran players and their defensive effort.
Also, no one has mentioned that the quarters of this game were only 10 minutes instead of the standard 12. 67 points in 40 minutes is a reasonable amount of scoring. Giving up 81 points in 40 minutes is terrible for a UC team.

Mick is exceptional at:
1. Coaching defense
2. Making excuses that draw attention away from the same glaring issues we've been seeing for 12 years

Just noticed that Carleton's leading scorer was Eddie Ekiyor. He was a Top 100 guy and originally signed with X.

Really couldn't care less about losing the game. Carleton is good enough to compete for a league title in a low-major conference and games like these are their Super Bowl. We played them on a travel day after playing the previous day with no scouting. If we play them in mid-season form, we probably win by 15. I'm not an excuse maker for Mick, but there's really no reason to panic.

They get a lot of D1 transfers. They have a guy coming in from UTEP who averaged 9.4 PPG for the Miners last year. They certainly don't have as much talent as we do, but they are well coached and are not bound to practice limitations like NCAA teams are.

Result doesn't matter but you want to see the returning players improve.
For UC to have the type of season we want them to have Cumberland needs to a be first team all-conference player and two other guys needs to be at least honorable mention all-conference. Scott, Broome, Williams, and Fredericks are the most likley candidates for all conference honors besides Cumberland but there is no one in that group that is a lock to be an all-league level player. In some ways I am more concerned with the pg spot which is should be shocking considering there are two seniors and solid freshmen backup. If Cane continues to turn the ball over and take bad shots out of the offense and Justin Jenifer continues to be an offensive non-factor then scoring becomes very difficult.

Carleton game televised?
Ole Miss lost to Carleton last night. Their season is effectively over. They'll essentially be playing for pride from here on out.

I couldn't agree more with your entire post.

It is more than halfway through the off-season. It looks like Williams is the guy who has improved more than anyone, followed by Scott. Ellie too, but my impression is, that he's in position to get the starting 5 spot by default, because it looks like Brooks is actually getting worse.

That's what it looks like to me too. But, not as sure about Cane. Scott and Williams seem the most likely to me, and Fredericks will get serious rookie consideration. One thing is for certain, we cannot have JC playing 35 minutes a game. If so, it will go the way of SK in 2014, and Evans last season, where, come tournament time, they were too worn down to be as effective as usually expected.

This is the biggest concern with me, in every way. Neither Jenifer nor Cane showed anything significant, from what I saw. PG is the most important position on the court, and I'm very uncomfortable with it as it stands. There is no more firepower from Clark, Evans and Washington to hide it anymore. I'm just glad that Logan is poised to gain major minutes. If nothing else, he's going to push the incumbents at the position.

RE: Carleton game televised?
Surfing some online highlights on YouTube yesterday: 2-3 minutes of clips from UC vs. UCLA last season; the home victory over X the year before, among others. The one takeaway in watching those: Evans delivered key baskets inside and outside the arc and had critical rebounds and steals that led to easy scores, often when the opponent had drawn close and the game was on the line.
I won't say that no one can replace him on this squad as I haven't seen the new guys. But it made me appreciate again what a special talent he is. No disrespect to Clark and Washington but Evans may have been the best all around player of the Cronin era. His size, athleticism and ball handling are a rare combination. Wish we (and the nation) could have seen him showcased a little more in the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight...but that's fodder for another thread.

They are really freaking impressive. South Dakota State has been a tournament team the last three years.
