RE: EMU cuts four sports
As a diehard who would be depressed for years if we ever cut football or even moved to FCS or DII: We did not nearly win the Cotton Bowl. That being said, we played well, nothing to be ashamed of, and the payout was worth it.

A one possession loss in a New Year's Day Bowl certainly is not something for any G5 program to be ashamed of.
WMU played well enough to win, and darned near did...score don't lie.
Go Broncos!

RE: EMU cuts four sports
Cutting their wrestling program might have been one of the dumbest things they could've possibly done.
But then again, cutting swimming & diving, and softball was equally stupid.
They're clearly in a no-win situation here but the sports they decided to cut are quite baffling.

RE: EMU cuts four sports
Including Eastern there were nine MAC schools that had Women's Tennis this school year, six wrestling, and only three Men's Swimming and Diving.
All twelve had Softball. Unless something else happens EMU will now be the only school without it.

Take Terrell's one giant gaff, a pick on our 10-12 yard line, which gave Wisky a free TD, and Wisconsin's other score in the entire second half was a FG..
To say we were never in it is absurd...

RE: EMU cuts four sports
Dear Hoekjeness,
As you said, this was a no-win situation. I would have opted to eliminate baseball, but that was probably not an option, because they just spent a lot of money for an artificial infield and other improvements to the baseball stadium. Even though wrestling was improving, and men's swimming was great, they both fall into what MajorHoople was implying, how many schools in the MAC had those sports? The MAC was bringing in associate members to fill the ranks.
Eastern was not going to eliminate track or cross-country which have been traditionally strong, and eliminating men's and women's golf would not have brought enough savings for what was needed.

Then the athletic department needed to get more creative with their budget cuts. Cutting 4 varsity sports (3 puzzling ones) feels like the easy way out IMO.

Corey Davis TD catch with 3:30 remaining, making it a ONE POSSESSION game with plenty of time for anything to happen.

Wisconsin was the better team and deserved the win, but to claim WMU never "had a chance" is an irresponsible slight to the players and coaches.
Haters gon hate, I guess. Sad.

RE: EMU cuts four sports
I don't see how you can go from having such a successful season in which we went undefeated, hosted Gameday and kept it close against a P5 in a NY6 bowl, and then cut the program entirely 3 years down the road... Do you have any idea how detrimental that would be to WMU? Kids would flock to GVSU and WMU would lose lots of publicity.

RE: EMU cuts four sports
Dropped softball as well. FWIW, I have a buddy who had one daughter playing softball at EMU and one at WMU. He remarked how much more generous EMU was with providing equipment and how much more demanding WMU was with expecting the student athletes to do fundraising.
Quote:The sports affected are softball, men’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis and wrestling. The cuts will affect a total of 85 student athletes (58 men, 25 women) and are expected to save the university a total of $2.4 million

I heard today on Detroit radio that EMU had 24 varsity sports, we have 14. Maybe this was inevitable.

Gobaseline said, " Like WMU there was never a chance", which I believe is what Johnny is referring to. Gobaseline was making an analogy that he has about the same chance of winning lottery as WMU had of winning the Cotton Bowl. Thus the responses referencing the reality that WMU did have a quite decent chance of winning, and was in the game right up to the end (even if it is also true that Wisconsin was clearly the better team that day).

Cutting the football program (or even lowering it a division) should NEVER even be in the discussion here.
That just tells me you don't understand college athletics and marketing 101.

I believe the number was 21, now down to 17. So yeah, they were already stretching themselves way too thin to begin with. Unfortunately I think the new A.D. was put in a terrible position from decades-worth of his predecessors.

And I stand by that. I watched the game. I rooted for WMU. Sure, I hoped but the reality was WMU was overmatched. Take away the NFL talent of Corey Davis and that 2nd score everyone seems to hang their hat on doesn't happen. Yet I'm told to believe his absence had little bearing on the imbalance of last years offensive production and therefore putting the D on the field far longer and forced WMU to run more often than ideal.

This is possibly the dumbest post of the year, surprisingly, from a poster who normally has some of the finest posts.
You can't "Take away the NFL talent of Corey Davis," any more than you can take away the career, break-out, day of Wisconsin's TE. How many clutch, and difficult, 3rd down catches did that kid make? It would be easy to make a similarly stupid argument that without him, Wisky loses. But he was there, and so was Davis. They were both intregal parts of their teams. As a result, Wisky narrowly won a hard faught game.
As far as how Davis' departure impacted the 2017 Broncos? WTF?! Nice attempt to change the subject...
Cheers!
And Go Broncos!

What a laughable "observation" given the fact that after Wisconsin hung 14 quick pts. on us, our defense held them to 10 pts. the rest of the game (and we outscored them the remainder of the way).
The final score 24-16. How is that "never a chance"?

We had 21 sports when the rest of the conference had 17 so this move was overdue
