Could be. I wouldn't have thought they'd buy a game or we'd travel all the way there without a return, but it is possible.

It was a filler. I am pretty certain that was a one game deal. We had to scramble to get someone on the schedule and we were left with them.

Got it. What about Bowling Green and Towson?

Towson was game 2 of a Home and Home.

Im all for playing road ACC, Big East, SEC, P-12, Big 12, Big 10 games with no return.

I would also do an AAC 2 for 1

And home and homes with Sun Belt, A-10, MAC, MWC.

C-USA and all Mid-Majors (G5) need to stop scheduling the UMES, Fairfield, Norfolk St, and JMUs. There is no point to scheduling an opponent of a guaranteed 1-bid league (low major). ODU should be scheduling aggressively because this what you get with a cupcake schedule

ODU is never getting in unless they win the conference tourney. It's time to concede the point and make the best financial decisions (with consideration for recruiting). Trying to pump up an RPI doesn't work for this level.

Agree for the most part, especially concerning the NCAA's. Winning the tourney is the ONLY way in now. However, a tough schedule could still get you an NIT bid.

RE: 2018-2019 MBB Schedule
On second thought, why not play the toughest possible schedule? The only tourney we can get a bid to is the NIT, unless we win the conference championship, so I'd much rather see us end up something like 18-12 and play a lot of good teams than be 25-7 against cupcakes. I want to see interesting match ups against quality teams, not 300+ rpi teams.

Selfishly, I'm hopeful we will play at Bowling Green next year so my wife and I can see the Monarchs, but buying them out might be a smarter move. BGSU basketball is not good.

Plus, who really wants to come to Ohio in November/December?? 04-cheers

That's what you and I want, but we are going to the games regardless. Sadly a good record is what sells tickets. The big marquee games aren't happening at the Ted, but you know what is? "The 25+ win team!" That will get the casual fan interested, not getting beat up by good teams.

True. Crowds got much more involved and the buzz around the Monarchs grew more and more as the wins piled up this season. I had buddies who are long time fans who couldn’t have cared less at the beginning of the season, but were completely on board and invested by the end. Wins matter too.

Yes, reported by Harry in the article about Dennis Wolff.

Let's hope St Joe's is bringing in the next Jameer Nelson and Delonte West because they graduate their 2 scorers and may well be JMU bad. I do hope the game falls on a Saturday though because I want to go. I have ties there.

The flapping owl is fun to watch and we can always hope for a return brawl with big blue.

Get JMU off the schedule. That is a waste of a game.

Re St. Joseph's. They are the Hawks, Temple is the Owls. And they lost two of their best payers to injury last season before the first game was done. Both will be back, and Martelli is an excellent coach., They'll be a solid opponent out of a place I'd love to see us get into recruiting-wise.

ODU is also looking hard for a game against a Power 5 conference opponent. In a change from recent policy, Selig said the Monarchs will consider playing either a “guarantee game” for money, or a series in which they play two road games in exchange for one at home. Previously, they sought only home-and-home series.

“We’d consider anything to improve our non-conference schedule,” he said.

Love hearing this and I would shoot for the stars. Away games in the craziest environments (Duke, UK, Kansas, etc.) should be on the table with 2 for 1s with VTech, NC State, Creighton, schools like that also discussed.

I want them to go all-in on this to improve the RPI and schedule. Winning 25 games with wins over 200+ RPI schools dotting the OOC is not worth anything in this current environment

I am on your side on this. I'd be willing to give up 2 or 3 home games if it makes the team better. Have a rotation of your home/home opponents (WM,VCU,Rich,JMU). Then work on 2 for 1 or hell even 3 for 1 games until you have a rotation of these games. They should have been doing this all along and many of us fans have said so for a long time. Only now are they seeing the light. I remember NC State, UNLV, Washington, UVA at the Scope. Pretty sure we lost 3 of those 4 but we were competitive. Eventually you're going to win some. And what do you think a road win against a NC State type team would do in almost any season? It stays all year long as your GOOD win. What GOOD wins would they even have listed this year? And if we start scheduling these games, then we're likely to play MTSU and WKU much closer than the eggs we laid this year. An why don't we leverage our FB team to get some of these deals? We add a cupcake to your football schedule and you give us 2 for 1 bball deal UNC/VT? I don't have all the answers but i do not something has to change. I love my team and always will but I shake my head every year when the schedule comes out.

Not going to happen. Tomato cans are an important part of almost every program's scheduling diet. They give lesser programs a home date and a winnable game, and stronger programs the opportunity to give their bench guys some run and an opportunity to road-test different schemes.

The best thing ODU can do to improve their at-large chances is to be in a better conference, whether that involves moving to the A-10 or AAC, doing their part to make CUSA a viable multi-bid conference, or helping to create a better conference out of whole cloth. Because if this year has taught us anything, it's that you are judged by the company you keep more than what you do with them. I'm not even a big mid-major conspiracy guy, but Middle Tennessee and St. Mary's are an object lesson in the abject unfairness of the system as it stands today.

At least MTSU did try and they got nothing from it. St Marys actually turned down some P-5 schools. MTSU worked with the premise that playing good teams on the road would help.

ODU was close a few years back. MTSU got snubbed, but would have likely gotten in with one CUSA Tournament win.

It is possible, and at this point, we need to open as many avenues to the NCAA's as possible.

Scheduling schools like Cincy instead of UMES not only enhances ODU's at-large chances, but it also creates a lot more fan interest.

(and if we lose, our at-large chances aren't damaged any more than they were by beating UMES).
