RE: NCAA football attendance lowest in 3+ DECADES !
The increase to 7/8/and in some cases 9 Home games and then the cost and time to follow your team if it makes the playoffs has taken a toll on fans. The domination by the P5 teams is wearing more fans out. Good longtime college football fans of non P5 programs are losing interest as well. The fact that every P5 game is available on tv has taken a toll as well. Fantasy play in the NFL has switched many fans to NFL and unless FBS goes to an equitable schedule, fantasy football in NCAA will never catch fire. Not to mention newer and older fans lack the desire to sit thru 4 quarters when they can be entertained by their phone on the couch.

Another possible factor is that a large fraction of P5 home games are the weakest G5 teams their team can schedule and who their season ticket charges for. EX: There may be many who buy a Mercer @ Bama ticket because it is in the season pack, but then skip the game. About 1/4 to 1/3 of a P5 team's home games are often this kind of cupcake opponent. The tickets are sold, but the attendance may not keep pace.

For those who think larger is better, the trend is smaller stadiums...
One Power Five source suggested the NFL and MLB have been much more proactive in downsizing stadiums to create a more premium ticket.
Arizona State, Kentucky, North Carolina and Penn State are all in the process of downsizing stadiums. In marketing circles, that creates a more intimate experience. Marketers continue to struggle to find a successful balance in stadiums. Across all leagues, that means making the game experience as close to that living room experience as possible.

All major sports were originated during a time when the game (or other activity) was what people came to see as a full day or evening activity. Sunday church was an all day event with meals served on the grounds (Fried chicken was called the "gospel bird" because of its longevity without refrigeration) Before there were night games, fans scheduled meals before and after the games. When I attended a Brooklyn Dodger vs New York Giant game at Ebbetts Field in the 50s, they played 5 innings in 3+ hours and no one complained. It was what they did for the evening. Two and three hour orations were common at public meetings.
Now we have more things to do so we want shorter games and sermons so we can get on to other things. There are many ways to shorten games, particularly those that are clock based. Baseball, the oldest big league sport in America, might be harder to shorten since there is no clock to take sides in favor of the leading team.

UAB hasn't had a chance to be successful to have a drop off down the road.
I suspect there will be a drop off from 2017 to 2018 due to opponents, etc.

CFB shouldn't have gone to a 12 game regular season, but they'll never get the genie back in the bottle. And 7 home games maximum is all that should be allowed for any team.

You may be right, but the big P5 schools look at those huge stadiums and think about adding more games to fill them (at least sell the tickets). I suspect we are more than likely going to see these P5 schools push for a 13 game schedule so they can secure additional guaranteed home games against G5 (anticipated creampuff) teams. They will point to the "made for TV" games at neutral venues to justify it, but the real thing is to sell those season tickets for additional high profit "W" home games.

RE: NCAA football attendance lowest in 3+ DECADES !
It would take a demographic study to determine who is buying sports tickets - individuals, corporations, municipalities, etc - to judge attendance. We know B'ham and some corporate interests buy UAB tickets to support the program and then maybe they go unused. That could be a factor for both pro and collegiate football. Individual sales may be affected by families moving away to places like Iowa, MD or NC. They may still loyally buy tickets for years, but they may not be able to attend all home games (especially with growing families).

Would make sense if UAB reported tickets sold instead of butts in seat.
Ray & Mark made an effort to announce attendance as butts in seat.

There is zero doubt this will happen. It's not the end of the world either. The return really boosted our attendance numbers last year.
