Spring Scrimmage idea
I have been to all of the spring "game" scrimmages. It seems to me I learn almost nothing about how good the kids really are, because they're playing each other. This gives me no perspective about how they look against other teams.

It occurs to me the pros scrimmage other teams, basketball plays other teams in closed practices, so why don't college football teams play a spring "game" against real competition? Wouldn't this give everyone concerned a better picture of how they stack up?

I'm going to email BW with this question. If he responds, I'll share it.

Because it costs 3x as much to move a football team as a basketball team. When the NFL does it they spend a full week there practicing with each other before a preseason game to make more $$ viable. It's just harder to do in college, especially in non P5.

There are limitations to what you can do. Coaches want to be able to control the environment as well as put the team in specific situations. It would be tough to do against an opposing team. Also, would the opposing team miss out on their spring game (home) or play one spring game away and one at home?

My idea for the spring scrimmage. Open up the darn west side. I hate staring into the sun.

This. And let them play a real game. It bugs me that Wilder tries to simulate everything.

Yup, so no point in discussing it.

I guess I expect differently from a scrimmage. I want something more like the Blue/White game in basketball. Just shorten the game to a half and let them really play.

Can't argue with responsiveness!

Bob,
Great question by you. NCAA rule does not allow for scrimmages v. other schools in the Spring. Added expenses and missed class time out of season are just a few of the reasons. Have a great weekend!

All the spring games I have seen at different colleges (P5 and non P5) have roughly the same format.

I've only been to 2 spring games, and both were when we were still in the CAA, but I'm pretty sure both times I sat on the west side.

I definitely recall sitting on the west side at some point.

Also weird, is the fact that his name is not in his signature.
