For one, Broderick loves sports and wants ODU to be successful. I don't know what his relationship is with Selig but he won't let him tank all of our athletic programs.
Next, I think ODU made a huge mistake. I'm Monday morning quarterbacking for sure, but I think we are all now seeing the P5 vs. G5 disparities, and all of the real ODU fans know that the sellout streak is nonsense.
I would love to have a nice 30k seat stadium, but some of you are kidding yourselves if you think that is going to make tons of new money and people show up. Our fans don't even show up now.
My concern is that our administration went "all in" like a poker game to go to FBS and a conference that provides zero rivalries. Now, they feel like they have to follow through on their promises so they're grasping at straws to see what ODU can afford. I understand the self preservation aspect of that decision, but I don't like it.
It's a pride issue for our administration, but the reality is that we can't survive in C-USA.
Hampton Roads loved a new football team to go watch, especially against our old CAA foes. The fans have no interest in watching a home game against North Texas and an occasional butt whipping by an ACC school.
I hate to say it but I actually would rather play JMU/W&M/UofR in minor league football and get back to more regional basketball. Forget the fact that our TV revenues have dropped like a boat anchor.
At the time, it was not a mistake, as the alignment with ECU, as well as the make-up of CUSA was advantageous for football and basketball. I say basketball as well because after GMU and VCU left CAA basketball was but a shell of it's former self.
Additionally, there is NO indication that we were going to be invited to the A-10. despite some JMU like delusions that if we wanted to go to a conference, we could do so by nothing more than force of will.
AND...the impact of then Cox bill was totally unforeseen as well.
So, what now?
Alignment will start again in 2025/2026 at the end of the GORs (sans the ACC and the SEC; the SEC not needing one, and the ACC's extended until 2030.)
One thing that many here are missing is that the dichotomy that is the P5/G5 is occurring in basketball as well, just a bit more slowly. There is coming a time, sooner than later, where the likelyhood of a non P5 even getting to the final 16 will be a rarity.
Indeed, within a few years, even the A10 may be a one bid league.
IF the 2025/2026 realignment allows us to be in the same conference with ECU and Navy, we should be ok
Otherwise we might then consider moving back down in football, with JMU, W&M, and UR , and attempting to align our basketball with VCU and GMU, if possible.
